Rob Pollard VP Endace EMEA Sales, Emulex Corporation

QBiggest influence?

A There are several, but the standout influence would be, I guess, my maths teacher Mr Jones. An incredible chap who could silence a room of 700 pupils without saying a word, showing that shouting and panicking achieves nothing. I still remember a lot of the maths too!

QMost valuable lesson learnt?

A Two ears, one mouth. Use them proportionately.

QOne company to watch (other than your own)?

A One company that continues to catch my eye and my professional interest is

iSight Partners, a fascinating company with a great business model around cyber threat intelligence. Definitely destined for great things.

QIf you weren’t an IT exec, what would you like to be?

A Obviously, I would have been a highly successful racing driver if I’d have

chosen that route. However, more likely I would have ended up becoming a farmer – at least a tractor has more attachments.

QIn charge for the day, what world problem would you address?

A It would have to be the issue of corruption. People need confidence

in those they deal with, be it Publisher

professionally, politically, legally or socially. Corrupt practices undermine all of us and result in an unnecessarily unfair society.

QShirt and tie or dress down?

A Definitely shirt and jacket. Turning up to see a customer in jeans just doesn’t do it for me I’m afraid. However, I think it is now acceptable in many business cases to do away with the tie – thankfully!

QYour three desert island music choices?

A Massive Attack, Dire Straits, 3 Doors Down. That should cover most mood swings!

QGuess who’s coming to dinner – your five guests, (real or fictional characters)?

A Stephen Fry David Mitchell

Brian Cox (the physicist/D-Ream keyboard player) Richard Branson Gandalf

QA book, a movie or the TV?

A All sounds good, but a good book probably just edges the other two. Of course with ebooks now all of the above risk extending the day’s screen cogitation!

QYour hero or heroine from history?

A Roger Bannister – for refusing to listen to everyone who thought the four

minute mile wasn’t possible. Just because it hasn’t been done before…

QYou’re hero or heroine alive and well?

A Stephen Fry – eloquence, intelligence and a wicked sense of humour. What a fantastic combination!

QPet hates?

A Tardiness, bad grammar, “uptalk” and no whiteboard markers in a meeting room.

QWhere does the time machine take you and why?

A Into the future. I’m fascinated – and why go backwards? Apart from perhaps

going back just for that one lottery draw.

QBring Your Own Device or Bring Your Own Disaster (waiting to happen at

some point in the future)?

A BYOD will carry on and happen whatever we call it. Therefore, it is

best that we embrace it, making sure the infrastructure and tools are in place to best deal with it rather than fighting a losing battle to prevent it.
