editor’s note
Start with the simple stuff As we start a new year, there are no prizes for guessing the technologies and business processes that will continue to command attention: Software-Defined Everything, BYOD, Cloud and Managed Services, Big Data and the like. However, it would be nice to think that before companies rush headlong into these buzz topics, they spend a little bit of time understanding just where they are right now in terms of their existing ICT infrastructure. If I have learned one thing this year (other than the confusion that terms like Cloud and Big Data spread as no two people can agree on the same definition!), it is that the quickest and easiest efficiency and economic gains to be made in the data centre are the result of some simple, but obvious housekeeping.
It might fill the individual concerned with dread, but understanding the workload that your current server and storage estate can underpin is a relatively simple task. Tracing applications to the relevant server(s) and storage boxes might be a little bit trickier, but it’s fairly essential if you are serious about optimisation. You may well be surprised at just how many servers are all but redundant right now, and how much data is being stored on inappropriate (ie unnecessarily expensive) storage.
And then you just might find that the power and cooling plant is not delivering what you think it should be – that there’s plenty of room to turn down/off the cooling rather more frequently than imagined.
I appreciate that lifting the lid on the data centre is a little like going into the attic – you see one almighty mess, and decide to leave it for another six months, but if you are serious about data centre efficiency, there is no alternative.
