BOC now offering R1234yf in the UK

OPTEON YF (R1234yf), a new environmentally friendly refrigerant for cars, is now available in the UK and Ireland from BOC, the UK’s biggest industrial gases business and a member of the Linde Group. Produced by DuPont, Opteon YF has a significantly lower global warming potential (GWP) – but the same cooling capability – as the current car refrigerant R134a.

The EU’s MAC Directive 2006/40 has, since January 2011, capped the GWP of mobile air conditioning (MAC) refrigerant gases used in new car design platforms at 150.

With a GWP of four, Opteon YF is 99.7% lower than that of R134a and substantially reduces the carbon footprint of the refrigeration system over the vehicle’s lifetime. As Ruth Leland, BOC’s sales and marketing manager for refrigerants, said: “We are extremely pleased to offer Opteon YF across the UK. “We are seeing a steady increase in demand for Opteon YF as car manufacturers continue to launch new car models or platforms and need to move to a refrigerant with very low global warming potential.”

Toshiba extends warranty from accredited to quality

SIX MONTHS after

launching the industry’s first seven-year ‘Total Peace of Mind’ warranty to accredited installers, Toshiba Air Conditioning has announced it is expanding the ‘Total Peace of Mind’ scheme to include qualified installers during 2014.

This gives five years’ full cover at the new enhanced level, and opens up the scheme to many more companies.

David Dunn, general manager of Toshiba Air Conditioning, said: “We have had an enthusiastic response to our pioneering warranty. Accredited installers really appreciate the assurance it provides. We now want to extend the ‘Total Peace of Mind’ offer to qualified installers so that they, too, can apply and benefit from the upgraded warranty.” Under the previous standard scheme, in the unlikely event of a component such as a PCB failing, the installer would receive a new PCB plus £28 towards labour costs – which, while not covering the full labour cost of replacing the part, was in

line with industry practice. Under the new enhanced scheme, Toshiba would supply a new PCB and £175.00 labour costs to the qualified installer, a realistic reflection of the actual cost of sending an engineer to carry out the works.

Alternatively, the work could be carried out by Toshiba at the request of the qualified installer. This new warranty is available to all registered Toshiba qualified installers completing the required training modules, subject to the equipment being installed and commissioned in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines. The qualified installers complete a commissioning sheet for each project, which is then checked by Toshiba’s technical team and, subject to standards being met, a warranty certificate issued. In the event of a warranty claim, the qualified installer can either claim the replacement component and labour allowance, which should fully cover the replacement work, or instruct Toshiba to replace the component on their behalf.
