6 News All nations begin homework on Climate Change

FOLLOWING THE COP 19 international talks on climate change held last week at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland, Edward Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, has outlined the outcome. He said: “The UK’s key objective for the Warsaw climate change talks has been met. All nations have now

agreed to start their homework to prepare for a global climate change deal in 2015.

“The world now has a work programme, with timetables. While the long negotiations in Poland showed there are many tough talks ahead of us, the determined diplomacy of the UK and EU achieved our aims, building alliances with our friends across the world.

He continued: “From a new rulebook and finance to strengthen our work to tackle deforestation around the world to a vital new package on measuring, reporting and verifying emissions, this was a conference that dealt with the nuts and bolts for the global agreement we believe is possible in 2015. By announcing the UK was joining

Insuring the emergence of R32 in UK systems

YOU MAY have noticed the recent hot topic about whether or not cover will be available at all, or certainly at a commercially viable cost for contractors who handle or are exposed to R32 in the future, says First Insurance Solutions. Insurance companies will look to ensure that policies are able to be tailored to include this cover and look to provide it at an affordable cost. The insurance market currently has no shortage of capacity and this is a positive thing as it drives prices down and means that insurers are more willing to include additional covers such as extensions in the wording or additional risks to the trade. The use of R32 and its implications is very much still under consideration

at this stage, and current insurance covers offered through policies does not extend to the use, exposure or handling of it. As the gas is classified as flammable, the contractor will have a duty to include R32 as part of its health and safety policy and regime, and this duty includes training for employees and risk assessments, as well as ensuring that it forms part of fire risk assessments. From an insurance point of view, initially the use of R32 must be disclosed to your insurer/broker, but once the use of it becomes industry-wide and accepted it could become part of the accepted trade activity for a refrigeration/air conditioning contractor. It would need to be included across your

cover – both in respect of your liability insurance and also your vehicle/fleet policy will need to be made aware that you are carrying a hazardous (flammable) gas.

With F-Gas and the HSE guidelines and directives, the air conditioning and refrigeration industry in the UK has never been so well managed and trained, and First Insurance Solutions has seen an excellent claims record to date against the contractors it works with. Gone are the days when the insurance industry is viewing and rating contractors as plumbers – there are now several specialist schemes and policy wordings available specifically for the air

conditioning and refrigeration industry.

the United States in their policy of ending support for public financing of new coal- fired power plants overseas, combined with our extra help for some of the world’s poorest to adapt to the climate change that is already seriously affecting many communities, the UK continued its strong record of leading on climate change action.”
