Fans 31
A simple thing can go a long way A fan is a simple device, but when combined with other elements, it becomes so much
more. Nicolas Charluteau, air handling units and water terminals portfolio manager for Trane in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, explains.
OFTEN THE SIMPLE things in life are the ones that can make the biggest impact. Take a fan for example – a relatively simple device consisting of rotating vanes or blades. The basic function of it is to move air around which can either cool, warm or refresh air supply.
In the same way, a coil is a relatively straightforward device that can be used to provide heat or cold.
But when you team up a fan and a coil together with a filter and a controller, the result is so much more.
Those devices working seamlessly together in a well-designed fan coil unit can have a big impact in creating a comfortable, quiet indoor environment. Modern day fan coil units, such as the UniTrane Harmony range by Trane, are often very configurable in order to simplify installation and suit a wide variety of customer needs for the optimum combination of performance, acoustic comfort and operating costs. The units are particularly suited for spaces where silence and comfort are essential, such as hotel rooms and offices.
Fan coil units are versatile and can be easily and quickly integrated into existing spaces, often without the necessity for ductwork, ceiling modification or wall thermostat installation.
The possibilities of configuration are numerous. Both cabinet and concealed versions are available which can be mounted either in a vertical or horizontal position for wall or ceiling installation. Due to their relative simplicity, fan coil units offer an effective way to provide air-conditioning in new or refurbished buildings. The benefits of fan coil units include amongst others simplified installation, extreme configurability and flexibility for future changes in load or space layout.

Heating and cooling output can be controlled by adjusting the speed of the fan motor within a fan coil unit. The use of electronically commutated (EC) fan motor technology – instead of the conventional alternating current (AC) motors – can achieve substantial energy savings and increase acoustic and thermal comfort. While AC fan motors run on fixed speeds, EC fan motors run at all speeds throughout the entire operating range of the unit, with the motor rpm-controlled through a signal from a unit controller. UniTrane Harmony models reduces power consumption by an average of 67%, therefore lowering the overall energy consumption of the building. The continuously variable fan speed eliminates noisy switching and minimises sound emissions, making the unit virtually quiet. The EC fan motor delivers optimal comfort because of its ability to quickly respond to changing conditions and maintain a steady ambient temperature.
Breathing easy
Air quality is a critical component for creating comfortable indoor environments. Minute particles like dust, smoke and bacteria are too small to be effectively filtered out by nose and throat as they are inhaled. When reaching the lungs, these particles can trigger unpleasant or even allergic reactions.
Conventional air filters used in fan coil units do not catch the fine particles. And those particles that are caught in the filter can result in increased pressure drop, negatively impacting the airflow of the unit.
This often results in less air being filtered and the system operating inefficiently. In addition the air quality and indoor occupant comfort is comprised. Air quality is significantly increased by employing fan coil filters that capture even the finest micrometric particles without compromising unit performance, such
as the Trane CleanEffects electrostatic filtration technology. This filtration technology minimises pressure drop and maximises the volume of delivered clean air, while capturing particles as small as 0.1 micron.
This makes it 100 times more effective than a conventional EU3 filter and allows for removal of up to 99.98% of particles and allergens from filtered indoor air. The CleanEffects filters are easy to clean and depending on usage require rinsing once every three to nine months, significantly reducing operating costs.
The new generation of fan coil units is particularly configurable in order to simplify installation and are designed to provide thermal and acoustical comfort for room occupants while ensuring the highest air quality.
