Three in running for contracts worth £1bn
Three contractors will get an early Christmas present as a hat-trick of road maintenance contracts worth nearly £1 billion are decided in the coming weeks.
Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet meet on 12 December, where after a period of evaluation, the winner of a contract that could be worth £300 million will be named.
Local outfi t Alun Griffi ths has been tipped to pip Ferrovial subsidiary Amey, French-owned Ringway/Eurovia and Dutch outfi t VolkerHighways to the deal, which is due to start on 1 April 2014.
Tenders were returned in mid-September for a six and a half year contract that is expected to see spending of between £20 and £30 million a year with an optional six-year extension.
A council spokesperson said: “The next step is to report to cabinet on 12 December with a recommendation for award so the usual cabinet programme will dictate the date the recommendation and subsequent award become public.”
Milton Keynes Borough Council held a cabinet meeting on 27 November to
decide the winner of a £200 million deal that includes highways, street lighting and highways structures maintenance.
Colas and Ringway Eurovia are amongst eight contractors circling a 10- year contract that will replace a host of smaller deals. “A formal announcement will be made as appropriate following that meeting,” said a council spokeswoman.
The biggest deal is Gloucestershire County Council’s £450 million contract. Atkins has worked for the council since 2005 and is up against Amey and joint ventures between Balfour Beatty/ Halcrow and Ringway/Jacobs.
With bids submitted in August, a decision on a winner had been scheduled for October but a council spokesperson said: “We have to go through a period of announcing to the four companies that tendered and then there are cooling off periods until the winner is named publicly: that should be mid-December.”
Contract win for Route One
Route One Highways has been awarded a contract for the maintenance of bridges and structures in the East Midlands (Area 7), Yorkshire (Area 12) and the North East (Area 14).
The company beat six other contractors in the race to join A-one+ in ‘the collaboration hub’ for delivery of bridges and structures maintenance and renewal works across the managing agent contractor (MAC) contracts.
Works involve bridge expansion joints, waterproofi ng and other associated structures maintenance for a period of up to two years. The contract is valued at £1 million per year although this could double over the contract period.
Director Matthew Pert said: “This further cements Route One’s position as the most progressive bridges and structures contractor in the UK. We are looking to
support Aone+ moving forward in future bids for asset support contracts.”
Route One is a structures and highways maintenance company operating across the whole of the UK. The fi rm’s services in the structures market include all types of bridge expansion joints, waterproofi ng, concrete repairs and protective coatings.
In addition to its structures services, Route One offer highways maintenance services including asphalt and concrete repairs, gully and manhole repairs/ replacement and joint repairs (inlaid and screeded).
A-one+ is a joint venture between CH2MHILL, Colas and Costain.

Contracts round-up
Contractors interested in bidding for an estimated £20 million project to build a 1km link road between the Stallingborough Interchange on the A180 trunk road to the minor B1210 at Immingham in Humberside must express interest to North East Lincolnshire Council by 19 December. Shortlisted bidders will be notifi ed by the New Year with work expected to begin in April 2014 and take 12 months.
South West Highways, Newton Abbot-based Road Form and Walker Construction are in the mix for a £2 million job for Devon County Council to carry out improvements to a fi ve- arm junction on the A39 south of Barnstaple. Work includes increasing the A39 approach section from two to three lanes and will take 18 months. A start on site is scheduled in early 2014.
Local outfi t Walter Thompson and York-based William Birch & Sons are amongst the contractors to submit bids to North Yorkshire Council for a £500,000 job to build a highways depot at Northallerton. A decision is imminent as the winning fi rm is expected to start on site early in 2014 with work likely to take around three months.
AECOM/Mott MacDonald, Arup, Atkins/ Mouchel, Capita, CH2M Hill/Fairhurst, Jacobs, URS and WSP/Ramboll/ Fehily Timoney have submitted bids for three major design commissions on Transport Scotland’s £3 billion proposal to dual the A9 between Perth and Inverness. Each of the contracts are worth between £40 million and £60 million and an award is expected in the New Year.
Volker Fitzpatrick is understood to have beaten a number of other contractors, including Carillion and Geoffrey Osborne, to the contract for a £15 million batch of improvements to the roundabout at junction 10A of the M1 in Luton for the local borough council. A start on site is impending on the scheme, which will take two years to complete and comprises removing the roundabout and widening the M1 spur road to three lanes to provide a continuous east-west carriageway.
BAM Nuttall and Balfour Beatty are amongst the bidders for a proposal to build a bypass at Tunbridge Wells that could cost up to £72 million. The Highways Agency project comprises dualling the A21 between Tonbridge and Pembury to dual two-lane but work is not expected to start until September 2015.
