DECEMBER 2013 Ultracrete have got it covered
A number of Ultracrete coverTEC composite covers and frames have been installed in and around Plymouth in an effort to improve road safety for pedestrians and motorists.
Amey Infrastructure, who manage and maintain some of the UK’s vital assets, such as roads and railways, have carried out the installations.
Plymouth City Council acted after a number of manhole covers had become worn and polished due to heavy traffi cking and posed a serious risk to the public.
Ultracrete, manufacturer of highways maintenance solutions, recommended the installation of its coverTEC class D400 vehicular access covers to
resolve the issue. The covers are made of an advanced composite structure of glass fi bre and resin as opposed to conventional metal, and have an extremely hard wearing tread pattern, which is guaranteed for the life of the product (a minimum of 15 years). They are manufactured with an anti-slip surface that is equivalent in value to a high quality road surface and maintain their non slip properties even when wet. So in terms of safety, they provide signifi cantly more grip than iron or steel, whose tread surfaces become polished, providing a poor level of grip which can lead to serious accidents for road users.

ultracrete@instarmac.co.uk Yotta software helps council achieve savings
Street lighting software from Yotta has helped Suffolk County Council achieve cost savings, reduced carbon emissions and improved maintenance effi ciencies.
Yotta’s Mayrise street lighting software was implemented in order to support Suffolk’s aspirations to be the greenest county in the UK following cabinet approval of a part-night lighting policy. In conjunction with a Telensa Intelligent Lighting System, Mayrise street lighting was used on personal digital assistants
(PDAs) with barcode readers to link newly installed telecells on street lighting columns to the centralised Mayrise asset database. The integrated Mayrise Telensa solution allows for real time fault reporting, improved maintenance, and the introduction of an out of hours service for emergency services allowing, if requested, areas to be relit.
The system has helped the local authority achieve cost savings of £641,000 per annum and a reduction of 3,300 tonnes of carbon.
