Driverless cars will be tested in a pedestrianised area for the fi rst time after £1.5 million was made available from the Government.
The ‘pods’ will be able to carry two people and will be run on designated pathways in Milton Keynes city centre. It is planned that in 2015, an initial batch of 20 pods will be driver-operated and will run on lanes separated from pedestrians. By mid 2017, 100 pods that are fully autonomous will be running on pathways alongside people and will use sensors to avoid obstacles.
Early collaborators on the project include engineering consultancy fi rm
Arup, Transport Systems Catapult, and Cambridge and Oxford Universities.
The £1.5m forms part of a £75 million fund that will enable businesses to make and test low carbon technologies that will keep the UK at the forefront of engine design and help safeguard up to 30,000 jobs in engine production.
They will be the pilot projects of the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), which was announced in July, and will channel £1 billion investment from Government and industry to fund the development of new technologies over the next 10 years.

RSMA conference attracts record numbers
Roadmarking 2013, the 16th annual conference of the Road Safety Markings Association (RSMA), attracted record numbers.
More than 300 delegates attended the two-day event which took place at Eastwood Hall in Nottingham last month.
The event incorporated Safer Surfacing 2013, a seminar that included presentations and discussion on the issues facing the high friction industry.
It also featured an exhibition that attracted over 40 exhibitors from specialisms such as human resources, traffi c management as well as strong representation from both the markings and surfacing sectors.
For the fi rst time ever the event also included Highways Health and Safety 2013, a workshop based event, with keynote speakers from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Speaking post-event RSMA national director George Lee said: “From the small and humble beginnings of an afternoon meeting once a year, the conference has grown into one of the must attend events.
“We are already in the advanced planning stages for next year with the aim being to make the whole event much more interactive and enable visitors to really get hold of the product and see what it can do, rather than simply looking at it in a brochure.”
More than £1,400 was raised for charity during this year’s annual dinner and awards ceremony. The money will be used to help those devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
Roadmarking 2014 will again be held at Eastwood Hall, Nottingham on 12 and 13 November 2014.
