M

ERRY CHRISTMAS! WE TAKE A DIFFERENT TONE THIS MONTH IN THE CATTLE- man. Celebrating our history and heritage this month, we chose to lighten the tone and content of the magazine away from the

strictly educational and toward some “lean back” reading. Lean back in your chair by the fi re and enjoy Carol Hutchison’s gor-

geous photography and writing in “Once and Always a Cowboy.” Lean back and read about how the Western Heritage Classic in Abilene helps keep the skills and spirit of ranching alive each May. Thanks to Judy Richardson bringing the topic to my attention, we have

a story about the historic State Herd of Texas — Longhorns that are man- aged as living historical artifacts. During our summer offi ce and fi le cleanout, I found an editorial that

had been written Past President Mark McLaughlin entitled “The Old Blue Sign.” McLaughlin’s points about the meaning of TSCRA’s POSTED sign remain valid. We’re not just looking back this month. In the Issues and Policy section

of this issue, read about Pete Bonds, the newly elected TSCRA president, and the issues of great concern to him. If you know or hope you are getting an iPad or Android tablet for Christ-

mas this year, be sure to download The Cattleman Plus app. You’ll be able to collect and carry a whole library of issues on your device and lean back with The Cattleman whenever, wherever and in whatever form you prefer. Our best wishes to you all for a safe and happy holiday season!
