Three Chelmsford school boys have been selected by Essex Cricket Club to join their elite emerging players programme. New Hall School students Ben Allison from Colchester, Charlie Lockhart from Leigh-on-Sea and Sean Sullivan from South Woodham Ferrers have been identifi ed as having the potential to play for their county or country in the future. The year 8 and 9 students from the
Chelmsford-based independent boarding and day school have been coached by the former England and Essex cricketer Nasser Hussain OBE (pictured on right), who is the cricket professional at New Hall School, and by the school’s head of cricket, Gareth James (pictured on left), himself a former Essex CCC player. As part of the programme the boys will
receive technical, tactical and physical coaching from Essex County Cricket Club in order to enhance their skills. Charlie and Sean both enjoyed outstanding summers representing
New Hall across the age groups and have worked hard throughout the winter months. Charlie also took part in the school’s cricket tour to Sri Lanka in April and was one of the leading run scorers at under-13 level. Ben has recently joined New Hall from Holmwood House School in Colchester and has made a big impression on the team, immediately joining New Hall’s cricket academy.
VERONICA CROWNED TWO-TIME NATIONAL KARATE CHAMPION
Manchester High School for Girls student, 16-year-old Veronica Stockman, has been crowned national champion at two separate open karate competitions recently. The Prestwich resident, who has been training for less than two years, achieved a gold in kumite and a bronze medal in kata at the Ken Yu Kai open competition at Bury Castle Leisure Centre on 29 September. Following her success, Veronica went on to win a gold in kumite and two bronze medals in individual and paired kata at the UK Open National Karate Championships at Leigh Sports Village on 6 October. “Winning these medals and being
celebrated and cheered on by my club was the best feeling ever,” says Veronica. “I can’t really believe my success at these games as I haven’t been involved in karate for that long. Competing against much more experienced women was another personal triumph for me!”
Rossall’s three lions (from left): Lucas Galley, James Sutcliffe and Liam Ganose hope to add a national schools title to their England caps this year
THREE LIONS ROAR FOR ROSSALL
A trio of talented young hockey players are roaring into action for Rossall School this year, as they look to impress selectors in the hope of moving from the England under-17 team up to the under-18s. The three lions, Lucas Galley, James Sutcliffe and Liam Ganose, have played their part in a strong start to the hockey season for the Fylde Coast school, including an impressive 4-1 victory over North Wales. Such is their strength in depth that Rossall’s hockey coach, Guy Emmett arranged for his team to step up in competition with a fi xture against Keele University’s fi rst XI, which Rossall won 4-3. It is a leap of faith in his under-18 side, but with six trophies in the bag last season and with central midfi elder James Sutcliffe in such rich form, Emmett believes his young lions are strong contenders for the under-18 national championship this year.
Gareth James, head of cricket at
New Hall School, says: “To have one player in this set-up is a proud achievement, but three is simply outstanding. The boys thoroughly deserve this opportunity; I hope they make the most of it and are an example to others around them. It is the start of their professional pathway and their fi rst real taste of professional sport.”
