ECO CL ASSROOM

KEEP IT GREEN | 43 “The new classroom not only powers itself, but actually generates an income for the school with the extra energy created”

Eco Classroom ups the sustainability stakes

A brand new concept in school buildings has opened in Liverpool: an Eco Classroom that can make money for a school

T

he unique Eco Classroom Pod, unveiled at Childwall C of E Primary School at the end of October, is the first

of its kind in the UK. The new building blends cuting edge design and sustainable building techniques so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Opening the building, the Lord Mayor

of Liverpool, Gary Millar, expressed his delight that Liverpool is the first city in the UK to boast one of these buildings and urged others to follow suit. Also in atendance, former Everton player John Bailey praised the building, saying: “They didn’t have anything like this when I was at school and I am sure the whole of Childwall C of E will make good use of it.” Blessing the new Eco Classroom, Canon Gary Renison, chair of governors, said: “We are delighted with the Pod. As well as being a beautiful and contemporary space for us to use in a variety of ways, the Pod models

something fundamental about our understanding of how we should manage the earth’s finite resources.” The eye-catching Eco Classroom has been designed by Pod Living Ltd to inspire pupils and teachers alike. The clever use of materials from recycled plastic foundations, FSC timber, heat pump air conditioning units and solar panels, means this innovative school building has received an A+ EPC and Minus Zero Carbon rating. By achieving such high standards in

energy efficiency the new classroom not only powers itself, but actually generates an income for the school with the extra energy created. A

standard 75msq Classroom Pod could give over £40,000 back to the school. Philip Doleman, director at Pod Living Ltd, said: “We were keen not to design another square building that we see far too many of across our towns and cities. Old school buildings have been shown to have a detrimental effect on learning so it is important to create an environment where children can thrive. The use of natural materials has been proven to lower children’s heart rates by around 8600 beats a day so we have created a healthier and more inspiring space to learn in.” iE
