News Industry Agilent Technologies to separate into two companies
AGILENT TECHNOLOGIES is to separate into two publicly traded companies. One company will con- centrate on the life sciences, diagnostics and applied markets (LDA) and will retain the Agilent name; the other will be comprised of Agilent’s current portfolio of electronic measurement (EM) products. William (Bill) Sullivan, Agilent president and CEO, commented: “Agilent has evolved into two distinct investment and business opportunities, and we are creating two separate and strategically focused enterprises to allow each to maximize its growth and success.” According to the company, the new Agilent will be a ‘global leader in life sciences, diagnostics and applied markets’, with a balanced geographic revenue profile, growth opportunities in emerging markets, molecular diagnostics and clinical markets, and significant margin-expansion opportunities. The new EM company will be an electronic measurement company, with a position in major markets including communications; aerospace and defence; and industrial, computers and semiconductors. Ron Nersesian, who has been Agilent’s president and chief operating officer, is executive vice president of Agilent and president and CEO-designate of the new EM company, effective immediately. Neil Dougherty, who has been Agilent’s vice president and treasurer, is vice president of Agilent and CFO-designate of the new EM company.

Rainford Solutions is to supply its Vanguard outdoor electrical enclosures for research projects at the CERN European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The cabinets will house the monitoring stations which measure the gamma and neutron radiation in the environment in the vicinity of CERN. “This tender was won against strong European competition validating our technical expertise, responsiveness and an ability to compete on a European level with other technologically advanced companies. We demonstrated the ability to meet all technical requirements of this demanding tender including CERN Safety Rules, European Regulations and a variety of standards regarding resistance to harsh environmental conditions,” said Philip Harris, head of new business at Rainford Solutions.
This recent order is the largest yet for enclosures to be used by CERN. Rainford Solutions has previously supplied enclo- sures for a network to distribute data between the CERN facility and academic centres around the world. This time Rainford Solutions will design, manufacture and integrate thermal/ power management systems into the enclosures, which will be installed outdoors.
