Oil and gas platforms feature hazardous areas, and electrical equipment must be made explosion proof. This was traditionally installed in protective flameproof (or Ex d rated) enclosures, but there has now been a move towards other types of explosion proof protection such as Ex e (increased safety) or Ex p (pressurised). Intertec’s Ex p or Ex e enclosures, however, use a composite ‘sandwich’ material with high-performance GRP sheets enclosing internal insulation, and environ- mental protection provided by a gel-coat surface layer. Intertec’s GRP material is almost as strong as stainless steel yet is some 75% lighter; and offers exceptional resistance to corrosion, claims the company. The com- pany uses a surface gel-coat which is said to be around an order of magnitude thicker than the protective paint coatings sprayed onto metal. The material also offers high thermal resistance.
It is also possible for the composite materials to be prepared and treated – enclosures can, for example, be constructed to withstand high pressures such as offshore winds or the blast pressure of an explosion. Another possibil- ity is the ability to utilise different insulation materials and con-

A new and improved range of cases has been developed by CamdenBoss. Manufactured from moulded high impact ABS and epoxy coated steel, the desktop instrument cases feature screwless assembly via ¼-turn lock pins, horizontal PCB guides in side profiles, ventilation slots in lid and base, etc. These are designed for test, measurement, display and control applications. Also available are 19in rack mount cases for electronic and telecommunications equipment being installed into 19in cabinets. Offering depths of 260 and 360mm, these 1U, 2U and 3U high units offer cost effective installation. Now available from Metcase is the Instrumet range of 19” aluminium instrument enclo- sures, which are available in three sizes: 3U x 10.5” x 350mm, 3U x 19” x 350mm and 3U x 19” x 450mm.
Conforming to DIN 41494 and IEC 297-1 standards for 19” equipment, these accept stan- dard 3U subracks and chassis. Two versions are available with ABS side handles for desktop use, or a tough diecast tilt and swivel carry handle bar for portable applications; and all have internal support rails. Metcase

To help prevent elec- tronic equipment falling to the level that conden- sation will occur, Rittal offers compact enclosure heaters. The heaters with fans have capacities in the range 250W to 800W, while the smaller heaters, without fans, have an output range of 10W to
150W. These also provide a high level of energy efficiency due to their self-regulating positive temperature coeffi- cient (PTC) technology.
Positioned anywhere inside the enclosure, the heaters can be fitted either by snap-fastening onto 35mm support rails or direct screw-fixing onto TS 8 punched frame sections. Quick and easy assembly is completed using clamp-type wiring terminals.
