The Texas Society of Gastroenterology presented two major awards at its 2013 Annual Program. William Kern Deschner, MD, San Marcos, received the Marcel-Patterson Award. Named for the society’s two founders, the award is presented to a phy- sician who embodies the spirit of those physicians — someone who has made significant contributions to the field of gastro- enterology. Bruce Levy, MD, of Austin, received the Patient Advocate Award, which goes to a society member who shows tireless efforts to provide access to medical care to patients.


Susan Hardwick-Smith, MD, medical director of Complete Women’s Care Center in Houston, received the Medical Group Management Association Physician Executive of the Year Award. This award recognizes a physician executive in a medical


group practice who has exhibited outstanding leadership to achieve exceptional medical group performance in the delivery of health care in his or her practice and community through personal example and collaborative team management.


Gov. Rick Perry reappointed Harris M. Hauser, MD, of Houston, as chair of the state’s Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Com- mittee. The committee makes recommendations about the contents of preferred drug lists. Other members appointed include Mario R. Anzaldua, MD, Mission; Bob Hillert Jr., MD, Dallas; Scott Schams, MD, College Station; and Carl Tapia, MD, Houston.


Gov. Rick Perry appointed William Rice, MD, of Austin, to the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas Oversight Committee. Dr. Rice is senior vice president of clinical innova- tion for St. David’s Healthcare and the Central and West Texas Division of the Hospital Corporation of America.


Dallas gastroenterologist Harry Eugene Sarles Jr., MD, is the new president of the American College of Gastroenterology.
