U.S. claims five medals in Grand Prix kickoff event


The United States kicked off the 19th edition of


the ISU Grand Prix Season in grand fashion, winning five medals at 2013 Hilton HHonors Skate America in downtown Detroit. The event, held Oct. 18–20 at the venerable Joe


Louis Arena, featured all four reigning U.S. champion skaters and teams, as well as the outstanding talents of World pairs champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov of Russia and two-time World champion and 2010 Olympic silver medalist Mao Asada of Japan. The U.S. contingent won a medal in the ladies’

event and two medals each in the men’s and ice dance competitions, including a gold medal by five-time reigning U.S. ice dance champion Meryl Davis and Charlie White of Michigan. The top six skaters in each discipline following the six-country Grand Prix Series qualify for the Grand Prix Final in Japan, Dec. 5–8.
