10 DECEMBER 2013 Te Skating Club of Boston (SCOB)
couldn’t be more proud as it prepares to host the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the final qualifying event prior to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Te event, which marks the 100-year
anniversary of the U.S. Championships, will run Jan. 5 to Jan. 12 in the historic city of Boston. Te city has hosted the event on six other occasions, the last time being in 2001. “Boston is a city that has always come
together through its love and appreciation of great sports and great sporting events,” SCOB Executive Director Doug Zeghibe said. “After the shock and tragedy of the Boston Marathon bombings last spring, we have been reminded of Boston’s great spirit. Boston’s excitement over the Red Sox win- ning the 2013 World Series demonstrated the city’s faith and passion for great sports.” Te Red Sox, Boston Bruins, Boston
Celtics and New England Patriots are all storied franchises, he notes, and for Bos- tonians, athletic excellence has long been a source of civic pride. “Especially in an Olympic year, we ex-
pect excitement every step of the way when the U.S. Figure Skating Championships are held here,” he said. U.S. Figure Skating fans will get the red carpet treatment during the 2014 Champi-
onships, from the enhanced opening cere- monies at TD Garden — with a number of past champions taking the ice alongside ac- robats and other surprises — to the Smuck- er’s Skating Spectacular showcasing the men and women who will represent the United States at the XXII Olympic Games in Sochi. Te city of Boston is hosting the
“Road to Sochi Tour.” Staged by the U.S. Olympic Committee, the tour will of- fer public skating on the Boston Com- mon’s iconic Frog Pond during the event. More than 500 members of Te Skat- ing Club of Boston have stepped up to the plate as volunteers. In a special gesture of ap- preciation to the greater Boston community, the Club will be making available compli- mentary tickets to the opening ceremonies and the ladies short program at TD Garden on Jan. 9 — a guarantee that the open- ing cermonies will be a very special event. SCOB has a full plate managing three
venues during the Championships, from the TD Garden and the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center to Te Skating Club of Boston’s historic rink on Western Avenue in the Boston neighborhood of Allston-Brigh- ton, site of some of the practice sessions. Te focus on Boston during these Championships as a city that supports skat- ing for everyone, from the child learning how to stand up on the ice to the most ac-
