Cartoonists Draw the Troops
Eight artists with the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) animated the laughter and good humor of servicemembers and civilians at Kandahar Airfield Sept. 6 during a United Service Organizations (USO) tour of Afghanistan.
Family Circus cartoonist Jeff Keane; B.C.’s Mason Mastroianni; Mad Magazine’s Tom Richmond, Ray Alma, and Ed Steckley; Punderstatements' Bruce Higdon; two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Michael Ramirez; and Paul Combs made the tour.
Army Sgt. Randall Green said he enjoyed the visit with Higdon, a retired Army lieutenant colonel.
“This is me smiling, which a lot of these guys don’t get to see very often,” he said while showing his picture to friends. “It’s just awesome to have a Desert Storm veteran and famous artist actually drawing my picture. It’s a very memorable moment.”
CWO4 Randall Schlensig, ARNG got Mastroianni to draw him and his wife into a B.C. cartoon as a second anniversary gift to complement a similar portrait Mastroianni did in 2010 for the couple’s wedding.
“It never ceases to amaze me how much people appreciate us coming here and doing this,” says Richmond, president of the NCS. “It’s far more rewarding to me. The thing that impresses me the most of the cartoonists is that they know it’s not about them. We’re not sacrificing anything. We’re doing what we love for those who are doing the sacrificing.”
— Staff Sgt. Scott Tynes, USA Draw the Troops
THE VALUE OF MOAA’S BENEFITS
There are many reasons to become a MOAA Life Member. Capt. Ed Barfield, USN (Ret), who joined MOAA at a transition seminar, says, “MOAA encapsulates the issues that are essential to military personnel.” He continues to see value in membership. “I became a Life Member because I wanted that information for the rest of my life — and for my spouse. There will come a point where she’ll have this resource available if she ever needs it.”

EMAIL MAINTENANCE
Has your email provider recently changed the way your inbox looks or works? Tabbed email folders and automatic filing save time — but not when they hide your favorite e-newsletters. If you’ve recently seen a change, take a minute to ensure your MOAA emails appear where you want them to.
Also remember, the proper way to discard an unwanted email is to delete it rather than mark it as spam. Edit your MOAA email preferences at
