THIS ADVENTURE BEGAN about three years ago, when I got a call from a member of the committee planning the 150th Anniversary celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettys- burg Address. She was looking into events to add to an agenda devoted to commemorat- ing November 19, 1863, when Lincoln deliv- ered what many regard as the best speech by an American of any position throughout out history. Her question to me was, “Do you know what Lincoln ate on the train taking him from Washington to Gettysburg?” The thought was to offer the meal as part of the festivities.
I had no idea. But the question intrigued
me. In pursuit of an answer, I first called the White House. As so often happens while re- searching either food or railroad history — the two of them together virtually assures a positive response — the staff member I en- countered, upon hearing the question, adopted my enthusiasm for finding an an- swer. However, he had to report that no such information would be found at the Presi- dent’s residence. He suggested I try the Na- tional Archive.
The answer there: “We don’t have any- thing earlier than Coolidge. Try the Library of Congress.”

Barton, an early biographer of Lincoln, described plans for the president’s travel this way: “The rail- way authorities of the Baltimore and Ohio, who furnished the special train, planned at first that the president should leave Wash- ington early in the morning of the day of dedication, and return that night. Lincoln himself, with characteristic caution,
in-
formed the secretary of war that he did not like this arrangement. At Lincoln’s sugges- tion, Secretary Stanton procured a change of schedule. Instead of leaving Washington at six o’clock on Thursday morning, the presi- dential train left at noon on Wednesday, No- vember eighteenth. The train contained four coaches. The fourth coach, in which the pres- ident rode, was a directors’ car, the rear por- tion of which was partitioned off into a sep- arate compartment with seats around the walls. In this car rode with the president, his
