IF THEDELAWARE, LACKAWANNA& WESTERN Railroad had lasted into 2013, there’s a good chance that it might still be using “Phoebe Snow” in marketing campaigns, advertise- ments and calendars. The character always wore a white dress, and touted the railroad’s modern and clean trains. So it’s likely the Lackawanna would have commissioned pho- tos and artwork of her to showcase its newest road power. On September 21, 2013, the United Rail- road Historical Society of New Jersey depict- ed what that could have looked like during a night photo session in Boonton, N.J., featur- ing Norfolk Southern’s “Lackawanna” her- itage SD70ACe No. 1074 as well pieces from its historic collection. The Lackawanna loco- motive worked from Allentown, Penn., to Dover, N.J., in local service before arriving in Boonton.
About 40 photographers braved the im-
pending downpour to photograph the mod- ern power next to cosmetically restored Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 No. 4877. Un- der the cover of the enginehouse as the rain fell, other scenes depicted Jersey Central GP7 No. 1524 and NJDot E8A No. 4253 (be- low), “Reading” F7A No. 284 (originally Chicago & North Western) and Pennsy bag- gage car 9286. Much work by historical soci- ety volunteers went into getting the head- lights and numberboards working for all the locomotives in advance of the evening. The session kicked off the third Transportation Heritage Festival, which drew large crowds the next day. Old school Lumedyne strobe lighting was provided by Fred Jones, John Tully and Frank Etzel. Fixed lighting was provided by Ruotolo Photography. The event was organ- ized by society volunteer Kevin Phalon. — MICHAEL T. BURKHART
