or the first time ever the National Railway Historical Society visit- ed the 49th state, Alaska, for its annual convention. The result was a well-run event with plenty of interest- ing railroad activities, all set against some of the most spectacular and dra- matic scenery in North America. The convention was officially held in Anchorage, but was preceeded by four days of preliminary activities starting in Fairbanks. On Saturday, September 13, the first “pre-convention activity” was a cruise on the Chena River aboard the Discovery III, a tourist boat with a functioning paddle wheel. The first “runby” of the event turned out to be a
