Cummins Engine
MODULAR TIER 4 REBUILD PACKAGE: On September 29, 2013, Cummins, Inc., an- nounced its EPA Tier 4-compliant 4200-h.p. QSK95 Power Module, a drop-in unit designed to repower line-haul freight and passenger lo- comotives. The Power Module replaces the complete diesel engine, electrical system, and carbody of the base locomotive as a complete package. The fully enclosed unit features the QSK95 engine, alternator, cooling system, and dynamic braking system, together with integral Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment specifically designed for locomotives to meet the stringent Tier 4 emissions levels. The power module concept was developed by Sygnet Rail Technologies, LLC., formerly known as Global Locomotive of Tenino, Wash. An Indiana Rail Road EMD SD9043MAC will be the first locomotive to demonstrate the concept and is expected to be released by the middle of 2014.

GO Transit
MP40PH-3C REPOWER PROJECT: Mo- tivePower, Inc., will build ten new, low-emis- sion locomotives for delivery to GO Transit in 2016. They will feature twin EPA Tier 4-com- pliant high speed diesel engines, likely 16- cylinder Cummins QSK60s, which Motive Power will also use in 2015 to replace the EMD 16-710 engines in 11 GO Transit MP40PH-3C’s, which will produce a total of 5400 h.p. Silicon catalyst reduction exhaust aftertreatment systems will enable the units to meet EPA Tier 4 emissions standards.

NEW LOCOMOTIVE DELIVERIES BEGIN: MotivePower, Inc., HSP46 No. 2001 was deliv- ered to the Massachusetts Bay Transporta- tion Authority in October 2013. It’s the first unit of 40 of the new model, which features a 4600-h.p. General Electric GEVO-12 prime mover and electrical system.
The GE gear is a noteworthy departure for
MPI, which until now has used propulsion systems based on the EMD-designed 645 and 710 engines and electrical systems in its 3600- and 4000-h.p. MPXpress locomotives, which are used on commuter systems from coast to coast and in Canada.
MORE LIRR DIESEL EQUIPMENT: The Long Island Rail Road plans to lease passen- ger cars and the diesel locomotives to pull them in order to expand service on the Oyster Bay and Ronkonkoma Branches. The railroad is interested in obtaining up to five consists of
