IN BRIEF
HOT STUFF Building melts motorist’s Jaguar A London motorist has accused a City skyscraper of melting his car. He said the sunlight that reflected off the ‘Walkie Talkie’
– the nickname for one of several new buildings in the City’s financial district – warped his car, which he had parked across the road. Developers of the skyscraper say they are seeking to
rectify the problem, which they blame on the position of the sun at certain times of day and three parking bays have been taken out of service as a solution. Martin Lindsay told the BBC he had left his car opposite
the building for an hour and returned to find the wing mirror, panels and Jaguar badge had “melted”. “You can’t believe something like this would happen,” he said. “They’ve got to do something about it.”
THE NATION’S SMALLEST DOUBLE YELLOW LINE Westminster Council admitted to making a mistake when painting its latest double-yellow line. Measuring just nine inches long,
the council said the painted addition to the London roadside was a contractor’s error. Barely big enough for a toy car,
the useless lines are in Caxton Street, Westminister – between some parking bays and a taxi rank. Leith Penny, Westminster City
Council’s strategic director for city management, commented: “This was a mistake by a contractor. We are obviously not happy about it, because double yellow lines should play an important part in traffic management and road safety. “But on this occasion we can see
how absurd this looks and we will make sure it is corrected.”
