ROSES ARE READ, VIOLETS ARE BLUE Research reveals we all love letters A study commissioned by label and stationery specialist Avery UK has found that letters are a more effective way of communicating important business messages than emails. The study by psychologists at London’s
Metropolitan University looked at how different groups responded to an identical message when it was communicated by email or letter. Those taking part said they found letters
60% more engaging and 40% more trustworthy than emails, while 80% thought letters were more persuasive and 85% said they read letters they receive more carefully than emails. Participants were also 40% more likely to respond to a business proposition that was communicated to them by letter than by email. Gregg Corbett, marketing director at Avery
UK, said: “With the average office worker receiving 80 emails a day, this new research demonstrates how the growth in electronic communications has seemingly strengthened the value of a letter, with businesses today placing greater significance on mailings when they want to communicate something important. People like the fact that a letter feels real and shows thought and effort.”
SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY Has the smartphone killed romance? Are you one of the 29% of people who look at emails and catch up on work lying in bed? These are the findings of Infosecurity Europe’s poll of 1,000 commuters in London, revealing that almost a third of people work in bed, with 15% checking their devices as their partner lies next to them doing the same. Three-quarters of those that work in bed spend 30
minutes a day doing so, and 22% spend more than two hours a day – an extra 14 hours per week of work. When asked what the first thing they do when they
wake up in the morning is, 32% said check their phone for messages – with a mere six per cent saying that kissing their partner was the first thing they did. Claire Sellick, event director for Infosecurity Europe,
said: “The smartphone has had a massive impact on the way we behave and these figures reveal that is has even had an impact on our behaviour in the bedroom.”
