Products Lift trucks Check and maintain your forklift equipment with LOLER Tag

Accidents with forklift trucks represent 24 per cent of all vehicle accidents in the workplace according to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) for 2010/2011. In order to reduce this number, companies operating lifting equip- ment – including forklifts – must comply with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER). Failure to do so can result in a fine by the HSE. All lifting equipment must be maintained

regularly to ensure it is safe to work with. It is not enough to only fix equipment when it goes wrong; companies should be looking for signs of wear and tear before any deterioration leads to an incident. The HSE does not hesitate to prosecute when companies neglect their equipment and put workers and others at risk.

The LOLER regulation covers any equipment

used at work for lifting or lowering loads, including attachments used for anchoring, fix- ing or supporting it. LOLER regulations require daily and weekly checks of equipment and a thorough examination which is to be recorded every six and 12 months and where the lifting equipment depends on the installation. In order for companies to keep track of the

maintenance status of lifting equipment, Scafftag, the equipment tagging specialist, offers the LOLER Tag inspection system – which per- manently attaches to the equipment. Scafftag recommends that the LOLER Tag is placed as near to the operator cabin access point as possi- ble, for maximum visual effect at the point of use. LOLER Tag uses Scafftag’s Holder and Insert

System. The inserts provide a space for the equipment number, safe working load, a signa- ture box and next inspection date. The LOLER Tag inserts need to be completed and inserted into the holder to indicate the equipment is fit for use. If any checks fail the insert should be removed from the holder to display ‘Do Not Use’ and the operator should notify the supervisor. This system places duties on people and companies who own, operate or have control over lifting equipment. All lifting operations involving lifting equipment must be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out in a safe manner. Materials Handling & Logistics SEPTEMBER 2013 S15 Multidirectional

electric model Combilift’s C4000E multidirectional model incorporates 2 wheel AC electric drive, a redesigned cab and is packed with features to ensure efficient, smooth and quiet operation. The patent pending design incorpo-

rates full AC electric drive on the front right and rear wheel for increased trac- tion and with one of the drive wheels positioned directly under the platform/ load, very exact directional travel can be achieved with heavy loads. Regenerative braking increases battery

life for longer operations per charge, and LED lights as standard reduce power consumption and maintenance. Whereas conventional electric fork-

lifts tend to be suited to indoor work only, Combilift’s E range offers the ver- satility of indoor and outdoor operation. With solid rubber tyres on the two front wheels and a rear rubber super elastic tyre, the C4000E is equally at home in the warehouse as well as on challeng- ing surfaces in and around the yard. The new cabin design adds 220mm

to the width, to accommodate pieces of equipment in daily use such as barcode scanners and computer terminals. This extra room together with the deep suspension seat assures drivers of a comfortable ride and they will also appreciate the multifunction display on the dashboard with wheel position indicator.
