Hamilton tells skaters to have no regrets this Olympic season Olympic champion Scott Hamilton told skaters on the opening night of Champs
Camp on Aug. 20 to commit to their Olympic dreams, give everything they have in practice each day and fi nish the journey with no regrets. “I want each of you to have the best year you’ve ever had in skating, and just know
that when you get to the end, there are no would’ves, could’ves or should’ves,” Hamilton said from the West Wing at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Hamilton was the surprise guest keynote speaker for the evening, which kicked off
with a video of his exciting Olympic triumph in Sarajevo in 1984. He went on to talk about overcoming personal adversity throughout his life and the commitment he made leading up to the Games in Sarajevo. His message resonated with the 40 skaters in the audience, who stood and applaud-
ed the legend’s words of wisdom and encouragement. “I left Scott’s speech in absolute awe,” World Junior silver medalist Jason Brown said.
“I just kept going through every word he said over and over in my head. He has this incredible ability to captivate an au- dience, drawing them in with his every word. No matter how full the room, he makes you feel like he is talking directly to you. “Everyone can relate to his jour-
ney as an athlete, both on and off the ice. He spoke about pushing through the toughest moments and staying humble through the greatest ones. The impact he has on the sport is some- thing I dream one day I could have. He inspires us. Through his fi ght, deter- mination, perseverance and drive, he shows us the true meaning of a cham- pion.”
Two-time U.S. pairs champi-
on John Coughlin took Hamilton’s words to heart as he and partner Caydee Denney prepared to show- case their programs in front of judg- es and offi cials at the World Arena Ice Hall the next day. “Scott has always had the
ability to command a room, and what makes him extra special is the warm and unassuming manner in which he does so,” Coughlin said. “Hearing the story of one of our heroes who climbed the Olym- pic mountain was indescribable. His gift as a master storyteller allowed him to weave reminders of how to go about this year that seemed to speak to each of us individually.”
