“It pushes us to get our programs as ready as they can be early on, and defi nitely getting their feedback and the experience of skating this week helps us over the season,” Maia said. Having an outside perspective, Maia added,

is important and essential to improve. “T ere’s a personal conviction that you want

to feel when you fi nish your program, especial- ly because each step that you take, backward or forward, is eventually leading you to your goal,” Alex said. “T is event has really enabled us per- sonally the satisfaction of checking another box and giving us the opportunity to take back infor- mation and make the adjustments that we feel are necessary and the most benefi cial to us prior to the season.” Bobby Martin, coach of 2013 U.S. pairs

champions Marissa Castelli and Simon Shna- pir, said his role at Champs Camp is to gather as much information as possible and tap into all the resources that he can. “My job is truly to fi lter,” said Martin, who

coaches at T e Skating Club of Boston. “I’m just absorbing, gathering, grabbing as much as I can, and when we get back home and reconvene, we’ll decide the route we are going to take.” Martin echoed Maia Shibutani’s comment about the necessity of having an outside perspec- tive to evaluate his skaters. “Nobody knows these kids more intimately;

no one is with them every day as we are,” he said. “However, they are in a performing art, in a perfor- mance sport, so the perception from those who are not with them all the time is extremely important. “T is environment here is tremendous. We

are so fortunate to have this opportunity with all these exceptional offi cials and people who are here.”

After Champs Camp, that communication line remains open, Cyr said. Coaches can contact

Mitch Moyer, U.S. Figure Skating’s senior director of athlete high performance, and request a subse- quent monitoring session or meeting with an of- fi cial to make sure the skater is on the right track with the feedback received at Champs Camp. “T ey can also send videos on EX3 and

receive comments from that,” Cyr said of the se- cure athlete high performance database. “All the athletes have that access. Again, it’s come a long way.”
