BASIC SKILLS

PROGRAMS TO BENEFIT FROM MEMBERSHIP INCENTIVES

Get ready. Set. GO! T e journey starts NOW. Well here it is. Months and months of preparation for the 2013–14

Basic Skills skating season will fi nally pay off . As a former skating director, I always loved the fi rst fall session of Basic Skills. You get a whole new crop of children excited to skate. T e journey begins for young skaters when they step out onto the ice in their fi rst Snowplow Sam or Basic 1 class. You may ask yourself these questions: How do we keep them excited and engaged? How do we retain our skaters in our programs? T e key to running a successful program starts with you as the director. It’s important to bring enthusiasm to your Basic Skills programs. If that little itty bitty Snowplow Sam skater believes in you, your instructors and what you are selling, that young person is hooked. At the Basic Skills level we need to remember that we are selling “fun.” Our sport is unique, as we really only have one shot to impress our beginning skaters and their parents. If we don’t, we will lose our Basic Skills skaters to other, more inexpensive sports, such as soccer, baseball, lacrosse, etc. We believe strongly at headquarters that the grassroots eff ort of Basic

Skills builds the key foundation for our skaters, fi gure skating clubs, in- terclubs and hockey associations. We are committed to making improve- ments to our programs so that you as a director can be successful. Over the past nine months, we have made some improvements to the Basic Skills Program. We have redesigned the Program Record Book given to our Basic Skills members. Updates and revisions have been made to the Basic Skills Instructor Manual, which is given to all registered Basic Skills instructors. T e Adult curriculum has been revised as well. We also redesigned the hockey badges and collaborated with USA Hockey on the new hockey curriculum. Snowplow Sam has been given a new look and is now on Facebook. Additionally, we have implemented an incentive program for our directors to register Basic Skills skaters. T e mission of the Basic Skills membership incentive program is to

provide our Basic Skills directors with tangible incentives for them to use in marketing their Basic Skills programs. T ere are fi ve levels of incentives. All of these numbers will be based on the increase from the end of the 2013 membership year to the end of the 2014 membership year. All of our Basic Skills programs that register skaters will have access to all marketing mate- rials, such as posters, postcards, bookmarks, pencils, skate and Snowplow Sam zipper pulls, at no additional cost. Platinum — Programs that increase registrations by 400 Basic Skills

skaters will receive a dasher-board ad with the U. S. Figure Skating logo, with the call to action: “Sign Up For Lessons Today.” T e program director will receive a U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program director jacket. Gold — Programs that increase registrations by 300 Basic Skills skat-

ers will receive a large banner (33.5 x 92 in.) with the Basic Skills logo and the call to action: “Sign Up For Lessons Today.” Silver — Programs that increase their membership by 200 Basic Skills

here to provide you with the resources and necessary support to be success- ful. Our goal is to motivate, inspire and encourage our young skaters so that they continue in the sport of fi gure skating. We want you to succeed. We are all in this together! Please contact Erin M.
