How US
Universities Work With Industry

Universities are famous for developing the innovative technologies of tomorrow. However, universities do not develop and sell products. Companies develop and sell products and there is a gulf between the research being done at universities and the product development function that companies perform. University research centres, such as the Centre for Wireless Integrated MicroSensing and Systems (WIMS2
) at the University
of Michigan, are attempting to full that gap. This article describes how companies and academic research institutions can successfully interact, and gives a concrete example.
WIMS2 is a multi-disciplinary research centre that conducts
research in MEMS (including high frequency devices and packaging), low power circuits, and low power wireless devices. These technologies are applied to research projects in the area of biomedical devices, environmental sensing including micro scale gas chromatographs, and sensing systems for the bridges, buildings, ships and other structures. The centre currently has 42 faculty, 14 post doctoral researchers and 80 graduate students.
