“Working with

KYOCERA really has been a success story for us.

They have obviously provided us with signifi cant fi nancial

savings but I can’t put a price on the happiness they’ve generated for both staff and students”

how it could achieve its goals and save money at the same time, the timing was perfect. “I spoke to the KYOCERA

experts and realised that through their

channel partners, they could provide reliable printers based on

sustainable print technology,” remembers Leach, who was also

“very impressed” by the printers’ many features, including duplex functionality at no extra cost. Leach decided on 12 KYOCERA Document Solutions

devices – one TASKalfa MFP and 11 heavy duty desktop printers, including an A3 colour printer for the art department. The KYOCERA devices mean the school now prints duplex as standard and eco-prints wherever possible. “We have been able to increase our printing capacity around the school and that’s made a major difference to both students and staff,” says Leach. “The printers are fantastic – very reliable and robust and easy to configure with excellent print quality.” Less than 10 miles away, in Bracknell, Newbold

College of Higher Education also had logistical issues, albeit for postgraduate students. The college had an extensive fleet of over 80 desktop printers scattered around its 200-student campus and it was costing money. “It was hard to track the pages being printed and very difficult to work out the overall cost of our printing,” remembers ICT manager Prakash Pilley. After considering a range of solutions, Newbold

College decided to consolidate its army of desktops to five large KYOCERA multi-functional devices with a KYOCERA TASKalfa 2550ci exclusively for student use. Over a few months, the IT team removed most of the desktop printers and once staff got used to using the KYOCERA printers, and could see what they were capable of, they never looked back. The students are happier too because they can use

their ID cards to purchase print. For Pilley, this was a welcome relief from the “very hectic” system they had before, involving students entering number codes, which they often forgot. “Utilising the existing student ID card on the KYOCERA machines has made things so very much easier for our users,” he said. The environment also benefits, with the innovative

ECOSYS design of the KYOCERA devices and their toners get sent back to the manufacturer for recycling – but before this, KYOCERA gets an alert that toner is running low and a replacement toner is sent by next-day delivery. “This means there is absolutely no effort on the part of the college,” says Pilley, “which saves us time and storage space. It’s great.”

MONEY-SAVING DEVICES Restructuring an education establishment’s printing solutions not only makes users happier, but the bursar’s office too. On top of the cost-savings generated from duplex

printing as standard, Sandhurst School uses PaperCut print management software on its KYOCERA devices. This allows the set-up of departmental costs centres and provides a detailed report of all printing, which enables Leach’s team to bill each department monthly for the staff and student printing. Meanwhile, Newbold College opted for the SafeCom

Smart Printing solution, which lets it centralise its printers’ administration, which means print costs are tracked for both mono and colour printing. It’s also able to print its once-outsourced weekly newsletters in-house, resulting in another major saving. But never were cost-savings realised so well as at the

College of North West London, which has worked with KYOCERA since 1999. Back then, the 12,000-student college had a fleet of HP printers with complex drivers that were costly to run. Recognising the impact of uncontrolled print costs on both budgets and users, the college decided to significantly reduce its print costs by adopting KYOCERA printers as standard. But it was 18 months ago, when the college moved to print management solution PCounter to manage its printing requirements, that the real savings kicked in. As well as print management, PCounter’s cost-recovery facility works to reduce cost while increasing document security, workflow and mobility. “Our long-lasting relationship with KYOCERA has been very successful for us,” says head of IT Garod Barker. “We’re delighted with their team’s flexibility, their robust and effective products and how seamlessly they integrate with best-of-breed print management software like PCounter. We’ve made considerable cost savings over the years with KYOCERA and they clearly offer the most effective solution to meet our needs, both now and in the future.”

POSITIVE FEEDBACK KYOCERA has made a real difference to schools like Sandhurst and colleges like Newbold and North West London. But while they’ve saved precious budget, what the three institutions have all realised is it’s not just about the money, but the user experience too. “Working with KYOCERA really has been a success story for us. They have obviously provided us with significant financial savings but I can’t put a price on the happiness they’ve generated for both staff and students,” concludes Leach. With a robust and reliable suite of products ideal for any education environment, it’s likely KYOCERA will be spreading the happiness even further in the months to come.
