Employee absence could be costing thousands every year
When you consider that employee pay takes up as much as 80% of school funding, it becomes clear why sickness absence is having such a major impact on education budgets. Simplyhealth explains why employee health plans could be the answer
Absence within the education sector costs on average £647 per employee, per year.1 When this cost is multiplied by the number of employees in an organisation the fi gure can quickly climb into the thousands. This can therefore have a signifi cant impact on education budgets.
The education sector has seen an increase in reported sickness absence over the last year, with workplace stress among the top reasons for long term absence.1
Unexpected time off puts
considerable pressure on the rest of the team to manage the increased workload. It is often the case that this increase in workload causes more absence and so it continues. With the average cost of hiring a supply teacher standing at £3002
it’s
important that organisations look at ways to help reduce sickness absence in the workplace and in turn drive down costs.
For the same price as employing one supply teacher to cover for one day, fi ve members of staff can benefi t from a health cash plan for a whole year. A health cash plan covers the cost of a wide range of everyday healthcare needs, such as visits to the dentist and the opticians as well as physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic treatments to manage musculoskeletal conditions. It also includes employee assistance programmes which help to manage staff absence. Employees are also able to access a free, confi dential helpline that provides support for issues relating to health and wellbeing.
In return for a monthly premium, employees can claim money back towards the cost of these check-ups and treatments which will help to keep them fi t, healthy and at work.
Health cash plans form part of an overall health and wellbeing programme which can help improve absence rates, attrition and add value to staff remuneration packages.
How resilient are your employees? Healthcare provider Simplyhealth has joined forces with wellbeing experts, Robertson Cooper, to support people’s health, wellbeing and resilience in the workplace through the ‘Good Day at Work’ network.
