sector INTERVIEW

NASBM’s fresh start

The National Association of School Business Managers held a strategic review recently and found itself in need of a refresh. As part of this, veteran business manager STepheN MorAleS steps into the position of executive director this month. JuliA DeNNiSoN catches up with him to hear his plans for the group

own financial management. As this autonomy increased over recent years, first with the creation of academies and more recently through the Coalition government’s commitment to greater devolved responsibilities, an organisation for the profession was never more necessary.

Any group so long in the tooth is well-advised to rethink and restructure from time to time, and, with this in mind, in November 2012, the trustees of the NASBM commissioned Tribal education to undertake an independent strategic review of the association, which included an extensive consultation with all key stakeholders in the sector – from members to Government officials. The aim was to build NASBM’s reputation and ensure it was still able to meet all of the needs of its members.

The report was delivered in May of this year and its recommendations were accepted by the trustees, who established an executive committee to initiate the change management process. As part of this, they appointed Stephen Morales, ex-business director at Watford Grammar School for Girls and former NASBM trustee, to the position of executive director, replacing Ceo Bill Simmonds, who retired this summer.

A CHANGE DOES ‘EM GOOD For many, this was a long overdue restructure. “The common theme coming out [of the survey] was there was a place for the National Association, absolutely, but it had become complacent and was probably living off the reputation it had built post-[grant maintained] days,” Morales explains to me, in the lead-up to his taking the reins. “The sector had moved at such a pace, certainly over the last five years; the landscape is so different now, that the organisation requires a refresh.”
