The Healing Power of Sound and Music by Rachel “Amanbir” Chase A

s a Kundalini yoga teacher, I get to share the gifts of sound heal- ing in every class I teach. This is amazing for the class and certainly a cherished activity for me. We tune in with the “Adi Mantra,” where we place our awareness in the energy of cosmic wisdom: the vibration of the infi nite creative activity of life itself. How excit- ing a thing is this! The mantra is “Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo.” This single aspect of a vast ancient technology has given me profound gifts of insight and healing. Tuning in with the class and in my “sadhana” or spiritual practice, at home brings me back to the place of in- ner “home,” of oneness with all that is. It helps me to slow down and remember my pure essence of loving light—per- fect, whole and complete. It brings me back to the experience that we are in the space of Divine Love at all times and can come back to this knowing again and again. It helps me hear the sound before the sound, referred to as naad, the sweet center of the blooming lotus, where we know only the truth of love and deep connection with all. That makes me say, “WOW!” And I naturally

want to share this joyous feeling with everyone around me...

When this impetus happens, it brings us to the next phase of expressing sound and mantra, in celebration of the ecstatic connection: song and music! This is when we take instrument in hand and lift our voices to honor this connection with each other and the greatness of all that is, the moving vibration of the Universe (one verse!). As yoga practitioners we use ancient mantra as a tool for transformation, the infi nite sound current in action through our voices, to shift our very being. Imagine that all voices are one voice, that all music lives forever, never truly stopping, for all vibration is continually moving through infi nite time and space, shifting our very consciousness. In this truth of never- ending vibration in which we all dwell, with shared intention activated by our combined voices, we have the ability to heal the world with our music. This is the attitude and way of life of the sound healer and conscious musician who offers songs to uplift and heal. I have the honor of being in community with just such beings

and to be hosting some of them for an incredible night of music and yogic mantra this month in Altamonte Springs, FL. These amazing musicians and artists have been inspiring audiences and spiritual sojourners for many years with their virtuosic music, original scores and mantra music. They are The Grass Gypsys, from Boston, MA: Colleen and Justin Kleya and Lindy “Jaya Shanti” Romez from St. Pete, FL. Their lives and music have deeply enriched my life, having had the pleasure to learn from them, teach with them and share heartfelt conversations with them about life and music. Here’s what they had to say during a recent conversation:

Q: What are some key experiences you’ve had with sound healing?

The Grass Gypsys: “... When all voices, instruments, breath and space around us start to sound as one and the individual identity of each instrument is no longer discernable. These are moments of deep connectivity to each other and to source, where sound creates the space that holds the energy in place. When the sound dissipates, silence permeates, grounding and integration established. These are inspiring moments for sure.”

Jaya Shanti: “... Using mantras for healing. I experienced this personally after a car accident I had in 2000. My injuries brought me to a place in my life where I thought I would never be able to share my music ever again. Through this experience I began to chant every day and realized that the gift of being able to write, play and perform music was never meant for satisfaction of the ego, but that the depth of musical expression is endless, not only for me but for everyone, regardless of musical ability. As long as we can all breathe and hum, we can move the sound vibration. We
