GAMESCOM DAILY In association with

Gamescom Survival Guide

The world’s biggest games show is also one of the busiest you will ever attend. So MCV has called on Gamescom veterans to share their tips on getting the most out of the show – and finding that well-earned post-show pint

DOS AND DON’TS

Daniel Kilby, Project Manager, IGN UK

DO: Try and see as

much as you can on the trade day (Wednesday) – the public days become far too busy to see anything.

DO: Eat a big breakfast ahead of each day. You’ll need the energy.

DON’T: Underestimate how long it takes to get from hall to hall.

DON’T: Be afraid to eat at the canteen inside the Koelnmesse – it’s actually surprisingly nice.

Rich Eddy,

Communications Director,

Codemasters DO: Remember that

your exhibitor pass also gives you free travel on the city trams, day and night.

DO: Go on the consumer showfloor when it’s getting to max capacity – especially if t-shirts are being chucked to crowds – witness your punters and their fandom close up.

DO: Escape, shortly after… Work out who has off-show meeting spaces. Preferably hotel suites. Ones that have air conditioning, refreshments, and a bit of peace far, far, far away from those lovely fans.

DON’T: Eat sausage for at least two weeks before you depart. There is practically nothing else to eat when you’re there.

Michelle Senior, PR & Marketing Manager, Ripstone

DO: Make sure you

have paper copies of your schedule, people’s details, everything you need for the day. Don’t rely on wi-fi or that your phone battery will last the day – especially if you forget to charge it the night before after getting back from the pub.

DON’T: Be there on the consumer day unless you need to be. Crazy German teenagers are scarier than you think, especially if you don’t speak German.

DON’T: Get stinking drunk on the first night.

Marilena Papacosta, PR & Marketing Manager,

Tecmo Koei Europe

DO: Go to the Irish bar. It’s the

best place to meet people from the industry.

DON’T: Go to the Irish bar. It’s Germany! There’s beer everywhere.

DON’T: Stay in at night. It might be a long three days but most of the interesting stuff goes on in the evenings.

DO: Take the tram to

Koelnmesse. It avoids the traffic and delivers you to the door for a few euros.

DO: Pick up lunch early or late to avoid the huge queues at the catering during peak times.

DON’T: Even think about visiting the public hall on the weekend.

DON’T: Overbook your schedule on the Wednesday and see if you can catch up with people arriving early on Tuesday.

Stefano Petrullo, Senior PR Manager, Ubisoft

DO: Give yourself a

clear time to go home. While at E3 everything shuts at 2am, Cologne offers many more random places to go drinking and party.

DO: Remember to take a picture – yes, a picture – of your room number in case you do not remember when you come back to the hotel.

DON’T: Go to the Spanish bar. You do not want to stay awake until 5am and miss the day after’s meeting

DON’T: Drink too many energy drinks.

DON’T: Venture in the consumer area if you have an hangover. It’s worse than a zombie apocalypse.

DO: Try and visit the

Dom while you’re there. It’s an architectural masterpiece.

DO: Take some time to check out the showfloor and play some games. In what other job would that still count as work?

DON’T: Underestimate the number of fans that come to the show from Thursday. It will take twice as long to get anywhere or see anything.

Craig Stephens PR Manager, NCsoft Europe

Dominic Carey, Xbox UK PR, Xbox UK

Mark Allen, Head of Marketing & PR, Kalypso Manager

DO: Read the

floorplans carefully if you have external meetings. It’s easy to get turned around on the first day if you aren’t careful and end up late for your meetings.

DON’T: Think you can just pop out into the consumer hall for 20 minutes to have a look around. It’s a jungle out there and will take you at least 20 minutes to reach anywhere let alone fight through the crowds to get to see anything
