Koch Media’s publishing division Deep Silver has found itself competing with the likes of EA, Ubisoft and Rockstar following the acquisition of the Saints Row IP and its developer Volition. Will its newfound fame change the company? Christopher Dring asks international commercial director Menno Van der Bil
In an E3 rammed with blockbusters, Saints Row IV picked up quite a few plaudits. Are you surprised? It was our only real focus at the show. It has gone down really well with press and retail. One of the prizes we won at the show was ‘Best E3 – old-gen.’ And that’s true. I say it was our only focus, but we have a niche title coming called Killer Is Dead. The guys behind that game are artists, and it’s good for us to have a relationship with these sort of companies. It underlines our independence in the market. Killer Is Deadcould be a surprise, Suda 51 [the developer] is an excellent guy to work with.

In what way has Deep Silver changed since the acquisition of THQ’s assets?
In reality our DNA didn’t change. Our company is really down to earth. We are not comparing ourselves to the Ubisofts and EAs of the world. We are enjoying our promotion to the Champions League. We are enjoying our executive briefings with Microsoft and Sony, and working with the big guys. But we know where we have come from. We cherish working on niche projects like Killer Is Dead.
