Rovo & System 7
HINOTORI EP Phoenix Rising 7.0
Good collabs and mix-ups are all part of the fun of dance music, and the weirder the (sometimes) better. System 7 is Steve Hillage, a hippy guitar maestro from the dawn of time, and Rovo are a band from Japan. The EP is a collection of tracks that bubble and squeak under fluid drums and trippy synths with proper, real old style lead guitar lines over the top. And it’s top stuff.

Arianne Schreiber seems to be famous for some weird Japanese Manga thing called Evangelion. Here she teams up with D-R-U-N-K to make something of an unexpected cracker. Old skool WestBam sequence lines blow up into build-ups and euphoric releases worthy of the Dewaele brothers. The vocals go “Ooohh, we want chocolate” whilst asking for a “good beat”, and it all adds up to this month’s Money Shot.
David AKZ Once Upon A Time In The
Projects Bad Life 8.0
In a world where the constant opportunities to stumble across new music are only a few clicks away, it’s still reassuring to have certain personal filters available that carry a stamp of quality. That’s pretty much the function a successful record label has always fulfilled, no matter what genre (or lack of one) surrounds its operations. Bad Life is a successful record label, and this release demonstrates exactly why.

Always a bit of a party starter in a full-on sense, here FUKKK OFFF gets

a treatment from Modek that adds a bit of push and shove and give and take to the more relentless aspects of the German producer’s usual oeuvre. The result is a solid but not earth-shattering techno-electro chugger that gets things done and will most likely get things moving too.
KC Lights
Sweet Step Cheap Thrills 6.0
If you’re one of the millions of dance music lovers who are devastated by how truly appalling the new Daft Punk album is, this EP could help wipe away your tears. It’s nothing you haven’t heard before, especially if you are a fan of ‘Discovery’-era Daft Punk, and even then it leans towards the more lightweight end of the scale. But next to ‘Random Access Memories’, it sounds like Justice produced by the Bloody Beetroots.
M.U.I.R
Lights EP Deaf By Records 7.0
The second release from new label Deaf By Records follows on from the ‘Lo Fi Beats’ release that was featured here a couple of issues back. Lead track ‘Infrared’ sets out the stall for an atmospheric, laid-back and vaguely trippy mix of electronica and guitars, whereas ‘Ultraviolet’ takes it up a little into Ibiza sunrise territory. The almost jazzy tinges on third track ‘Gamma’
Music that is hard to pigeonhole is becoming increasingly hard to find, and therefore should be lauded when it drops at your feet. Alec Storey cites a varied palette of Portishead, Metalheadz and Herbie Hancock as influences, and over tracks with titles such as ‘Arpy Garbles’, ‘Margosa Heights’ and ‘Hebridean Mind Tours’ he pretty much delivers on those claims. If experimental bubbling euphoria and melancholy moods combined are your thing, you’ll like this.
Shadow Dancer Unspeakable Things/
Breakable GND Records 8.0
GND are another label who have a really consistent track record and, if you like what they do, you can be assured each release will be up to their high standards. Shadow Dancer’s previous outing was on Turbo Recordings, and here the Farrier brothers are back on GND with a new double-header. ‘Unspeakable Things’ mines a familiar insistently dark groove, whilst ‘Breakable’ throws in a kind of mutant funk to spice things up.
Simplicity Is Beauty
Fragments Wolfskuil 7.0
With releases on Heavy Reel and The Public Stand, Jason Courtney has already set out his stall, and maybe it’s something to do with the sun finally shining in the UK, but this set of Aphexy ambient electro tracks feels just right. Each track is a numbered ‘fragment’ and builds a separate atmosphere, with ‘Fragment 3’ being almost orchestral. Think Flying Lotus under British skies and you’ll be getting the idea.

AutoKratz & Lee Mortimer Faith (DPPLGNGRS

The original was a big favorite on this page when it came out last year, and this promo- only remix is well worth a full release.

What To Wear wSphere 6.0
A breathy vocal over an almost poppy synth backing isn’t quite what you might expect, but there isn’t enough of a tune to make for real crossover success potential.
SLDGHMR vs You Love Her Coz She’s Dead I Just Want You To
Know Always Never Records 5.0
A French duo from Miami, this is a bit shit and a bit great all at once, so that’s a perfect 5/10 I suppose.
