NIGHT MOVESis a concept to unite the veteran San Francisco house music vibes with emerging sounds of modern funk, nu-disco, deep house and (they claim) moombahsoul - whatever the heck that is. The team are talking up their mix of classic Chicago Trax with the current disco boogie revival, and promise to throw out a wealth of podcasts, edits and club nights curated in an effort to break the boundaries in San Francisco’s dance music scene. All of this would mean very little were it not for the fact that this month’s Night Moves has got a great headliner - Jimmy Edgar, on his only SF date this year. Detroit-born Edgar has been hitting firing form of late, though any artist who’s released on Merck, Warp, Hot Flush and K7 is always going to be one to trust. It’s hard to know just where he’ll go with his sordid, jacking house and funk, but it’s guaranteed you’ll sweat. He’s joined by Kontrol mainstay Nikola Baytala, very much a DJ’s DJ, who injects much needed kinetic energy, charisma and dynamism into his technically precise minimal techno excursions. Curveballs are provided by SF native DJ Theory, whose exclusive heavy mix of Moomba flavours, dub influences and disco edits is sure to keep the early floor bubbling.

VERBOTENare hosting a clutch of amazing parties through July, and this feast of sub heavy house delights is just one of many. Representing the bassier, ravier side of proceedings, scene leaders Trouble & Bass pull together a typically strong line-up with a rare headlining set from the ever excellent Hyperdub label boss Kode 9, alongside a much anticipated appearance from man of the moment Salva, who has somehow managed to stay way ahead of the trap pack, possibly because of his self-proclaimed status as ‘a hip-hop DJ and producer who likes dance music, not the other way around.’ The smart money is also on checking out fast rising star Tony Quattro, who’s recent ‘New York Anthem’ wins the no brainer prize for Big Tune of the Night. Meanwhile, Dirtybird come good with sets from founder and Eats Everything collaborator Worthy, alongside J. Phlip’s many shades of booty shaking house, and local boys DKDS. Look out for the other Verboten party featuring Carl Craig, Luciano and Moodymann at The Williamsburg Waterfront the following Saturday.
