Felix Da Housecat I Just Want To Be A

Lesbian (Remixes) No Shame/Rude Photo 7.5

Sharp electro-disco from FDHC, reviving his Aphrohead guise to lead a bunch of remixes. Other contributors include Riton, Human Life and Eagles & Butterflies.

Navid Izadi

Feelin’ Purple Wolf + Lamb 7.5

Dream pop from Navid Izadi, featuring a seductive vocal from the Bay Area’s Jesse Rennix. Soul Clap heat things up a little with their sizzling disco version.

O F F M S G

Hott/Theme Millionhands Music 8.0

Hip t-shirt label release their second 12” of edits-not-edits; this time twisting Karen Young’s classic “Hot for you” acapella into a sparkling, brand new modern disco number.

Remute

Gravity Remute 8.0

Hard electro-rave-disco- techno shocker from Remute, taking cues from Legowelt’s arcane machine music — so it would make perfect sense to have a remix from the man himself.

DISCOREVIEWS

a highlight with his bruising, electro-disco version.

Mirror People

Kaleidoscope (Remixes) Discotexas 8.0

Discotexas come here with a remix EP from the Mirror People. ‘Kaleidoscope’ is a rousing, euro-disco inspired tune that’s heavy on the funk clavinet for that authentic touch. To accompany, remixes from Psychemagik and Xinobi add suitable twists; the latter stripping back the original and working the drums. Psychmagik offer a surprise and take things deeper, fashioning a tough techno-disco mix. Top stuff.

10 EWAN PEARSON VARIOUS

01. LIONHEART BROTHERS ‘The Drift’ Full Pupp “High-drama prog-disco dancefloor smash, and hands-down my favorite new

record of this month.”

02. ANDRE BRATTEN ‘Be A Man You Ant’ Full Pupp “This modular-synth disco-techno debut LP is a joy to listen to, and I’ve

played three or four tracks in the club too to great effect.” 03. NICK MACKRORY & PHIL BANKS ‘Jaipur Palace’ Forgotten

Corner Records “Sitars and Belgian basslines in a great original and superb Black Merlin remix.”

04. DUST & ASHES ‘Crooked Dust’ Classic “DJ Parrot turning his expert hand to house is the best thing to happen to it

in years; eschewing ‘90s clichés but not forgetting great songs.”

05. NIROSTA STEEL ‘Foxy Pup’ Hollie “Arthur Russell and Bob Blank helped Steven Hall (Russell’s partner in Loose

Joints) make a solo record thirty years ago. It’s only just seeing the light of day, but fresh as a daisy.”

06. DARK SEED ‘Nightfall’ Ohmega “Spooky giallo-themed dancefloor electronics kick off a new project and label

from Richard Norris.” 07. HOLDEN ‘Renata (Daphni/Steve Moore Remixes)’ Border

Community “A perfect package: bracing modular flutterings of the original turned into psychedelic garage by Dan Snaith, while Steve Moore slows it to an opiate crawl.”

08. VONDEL PARK ‘California Analogue Dream’ R&S “Exquisite West Coast post-rock with a superb Factory Floor remix, which

takes it to the dancefloor whilst retaining the wistfulness of the original.”

09. CRAIG BRATLEY ‘Obsession’ Bird Scarer “No-nonsense New Beat killer complete with dark bass and pitched-down

vocals and a dubbier remix from The Asphodells.”

10. NEUROTIC DRUM BAND ‘Cardboard Wings’ You Are Here “Gorgeous synth-house that accelerates from super-slow to positively jaunty

in the course of 11 minutes.”

Alison Moyet Changeling/When I Was Your

Girl (Remixes) Cooking Vinyl 9.5

Ahead of a new Alison Moyet full- length is this EP primer, taking two album highlights and suitably curating ideal remixer choices. Horse Meat Disco’s Severino takes a break from a busy DJ schedule for a bit of studio time and whips up a sleazy house version. Portuguese duo Photonz (who have recently dropped massive tunes for the likes of Unknown To The Unknown) flip ‘Changeling’ into a hybrid of African kizomba and vintage Chicago house. Next up, the Ali Renault remixes in homage to the great Trevor Horn with a killer dub version, while Brassica turns ‘When I Was

Over the moon to hear of this new solo venture from Cage and Aviary’s Jamie Paton on new Emotional Response affiliate, [Emotional] Especial. Along with a little help from Asphodell, Timothy J. Fairplay, on bass and guitar, ‘Bizarre Feeling’ is the perfect electronic pop homage to New Order that’ll certainly get its fair share of play over the imminent festival season. Backed with a tracky dub version, the EP also includes a dose of proto-house brilliance, ‘To The Light’, and a sleazy, slo-mo acid grind, ‘Ju Know’. Welcome back, Jamie!

Your Girl’ into an ‘80s-inspired sountrack, complete with curdled melodies and the most wonderfully noirish intro. Superb release.

Craig Bratley Obsession (inc. The

Asphodells Remix) Bird Scarer 9.0

Fourth release on Andrew Weatherall’s defiantly vinyl-only Bird Scarer label. ‘Obsession’ takes on the guise of a slow, chugging D.A.F.-style, new- beat/EBM tune with a sleazy, detuned mantra and an incredibly infectious bassline that builds throughout. Weatherall remixes under his The Asphodells guise (with studio partner, Timothy J. Fairplay) and switches the mood with dub effects and beaming guitar phrases for a perfect Balearic disco-not-disco fix.

Headman feat. Scott Fraser & Douglas McCarthy Noise

Emotional Relish 9.0

Split release between Emotional Response and Relish sees this appealing alliance between three great producers. Douglas McCarthy, from Essex’s finest EBM duo, Nitzer Ebb, contributes his signature vocal over a sharp electronic production from Scott Fraser and Headman. A brace of killer remixes come from Hardways Bros and Cómeme’s Daniel Maloso, who provides

This latest on CVMR opens with Susan Luv’s ‘proto-house remix’, a techy acid-disco version that feels very current, less a homage to those early house/new-wave tunes by the likes of Jesse Saunders and Jamie Principle. The highlight, however, comes from the man-on-a-roll at the moment, Mark E, who weighs in with a sample-laden disco version with a bubbling, Yello-style bassline.

Sin Cos Tan Sin Cos Tan Remixes (inc.

Mark E Remixes) My Favorite Robot 8.5

Following that superb single of grinding, slo-mo, new-beat/ industrial dub music for Bokhari last month, Mark E returns to this winning formula for a couple of standout remixes on this new one for MFR. Working the galloping original into more of a vintage proto-house number, both his remix and dub versions greet us with washes of Larry Heard-style synths and viscous acid bass. Killer.

Tone Of Arc Goodbye Horses (inc. Prins

Thoms Remix) No.19 Music 6.0

Remember the infamous Buffalo Bill ‘tail between legs’ scene in Silence Of The Lambs? Of course you do. What about the quite breathtaking piece of music that accompanied? Maybe not. ‘Goodbye Horses’ by Q Lazzarus is the coldwave holy grail, fetching crazy prices at auction on a 12”. Here, sadly lacking the forever- haunting appeal of the original, is a cover from Tone Of Arc, remixed by Prins Thomas into a lightweight disco version.
