HOUSEREVIEWS Awanto 3
Holy Mozes Voyage Direct 7.5
Steven De Peven, for Awanto 3 is he, drops two bombshell-esque tracks for Amsterdam’s Rush Hour spin-off Voyage Direct, with caution advised for the Aardvarck re-rub.
Lone
Airglow Fires R&S
9.0
Manchester’s Lone goes deep into the basement for this superb two-tracker on R&S. The title track pulses with raspingly brassy Detroit synths and breaks, heavy with deep rave pads and twinkling bells. Its doffed cap to Mad Mike and Underground Resistance is duly noted, though this has a muscular funk all of its own. Over, ‘Begin To Begin’ is gentler, laden with shimmering flutes and a bassline tethered octaves below to their skipping melody. Both of these are totally and utterly irresistible.
Apollonia
Trinidad/Visa Americain Apollonia 7.5
All the collective dancefloor knowledge of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky is poured into this debut double-tracker on their very own Apollonia label. This is the sound of Paris after- hours, the sound that they’ve honed to a fine point under this new collective nom de plume. ‘Trinidad’ pulses and bleeps before dropping its wide open hats. ‘Visa Americain’, meanwhile, is a jittery party bombshell and both feature on their mix for Fabric, so it’s late-night house music par excellence.
Fairmont/Sin Cos Tan Automaton (Remixes)/Sin Cos
Tan (Remixes) My Favorite Robot 8.0
Two quite brilliant remix packages here from Toronto’s My Favorite Robot, one from Juho Paalosmaa and Juri Hulkkonen’s Sin Cos Tan project, the other from Fairmont, whipped from his recent long-player, ‘Automaton’. It’s genuinely all good, but seek out

Kris Wadsworth’s steely version of Sin Cost Tan’s ‘History’, the dreamy and wondrous Nhar remix of Fairmont’s ‘Sara’ and It’s A Fine Line — aka Ivan Smagghe and Tim Paris — shredding, then reassembling ‘Creatures Of The Night’ to do their dastardly bidding.
Footprintz
Fear Of Numbers Visionquest 9.0
Footprintz could be the best thing to have happened to Visionquest so far. Clarian North and Adam Hunter, the Montreal pair behind it all, stunned with last single ‘Uncertain Change’. ‘Fear Of Numbers’ is also taken from their debut album ‘Escape Yourself’, another epic ode to the synth. Here the excellent original version is augmented by a clutch of mixes from underground disco head Leo Zero. The main remix re- edits the track for the dancefloor, adding additional drama, but the two dub versions are entirely sublime, the oddball alternative dub in particular.
Frank & Tony
Frank & Tony Presents 004 Scissor & Thread 8.5
Francis Harris and Anthony Collins present their fourth collaboration under their Frank & Tony alias for Scissor & Thread. ‘Holding On’ takes the lead with vocals from Bob Moses, a melancholic lament on lost love. With its muted horns, it’s haunting, beguiling house music. Over is ‘Orchid Trait’, another vocal, this time from Julia. Layered over a gently rattling loop, and mournful piano chords, this is an alternative end- of-night anthem for the DJ who wishes to send the crowd home with something to think about rather than tinnitus.
Mugwump
Boutade International Feel 9.0
A blessed re-release of Mugwump’s peerless Boutade, a stone cold slo-mo house classic if ever there was one, originally emerging back in 2008 on the short-lived Misericord label. Orchestral and fabulously unique, it now gets a second lease of life on the Uruguayan imprint International Feel. There is the string-laden original, of course, plus a new techno redux which goes heavy on the wonky electronics, but maintains the atmosphere of the original.
SMD & Bicep
Sacrifice Delicacies 8.0
Simian Mobile Disco and Belfast boys Bicep hooked up to jam out this burblingly acidic old school house/deep techno anthem stuffed absolutely full to the brim with vintage percussion and what is perhaps best described as a thoroughly ecstatic build-up come the middle. Released on SMD’s own Delicacies label, it also sports two beatless mixes, both of which build the clamorous layers to breaking point. Bravo to all.
youngTEE
Get Deeper EP Southern Fried 9.0
South London’s youngTEE follows previous sonic salvos on Cooking Vinyl and forthcoming action as Joys Boys with Raf from 2 Bears. The title track whips the Roland Clark vocal with notably less fromage involved than in Fatboy’s ‘Star 69’, ushering in lush organs instead. ‘How Did I Get Here’, with its diced 2BadMice loop, is full of towering funk, while ‘Lewisham 92’ and ‘Can’t Stop’ complete a sterling debut.
Ejeca/Citizen
Loft 001 Loft Records 7.5
Opening rather audaciously for business with a double-header from Belfast’s Ejeca and MadTech’s Citizen is Loft Records. It’s ravey, bass-heavy, peak-time action.

Purple Velvet Death Of The
Warehouse Dirt Crew 7.5
Chris James and Lee Dearn get Chi-Town classic for Dirt Crew, with the excellent Waifs & Strays and Bohemian Groove pitching up for a remix on the flip.
Tone Of Arc Goodbye Horses/
Love Kissed No.19 8.0
Aceness from Toronto’s No.19, thanks to super mixes from Prins Thomas and Luca C and Brigante of the equally super Tone Of Arc. Super, then.
