BLKMRKTMEMBERSHIP PRESENTS TURBO RECORDING SHOWCASE, SECRET LOCATION, NEW YORK CITY, NY

FRIDAY JULY 26 TIGA, MARTYN, BORDELLO, TAIMUR & FAHAD

OK, SO IT’S A BLKMRKTMEMBERSHIP PARTY. You don’t know where it is. We don’t know where it is. But we do know it’ll jam. If you haven’t got involved with one of the promoter’s notorious techno fuelled loft parties you’ve been missing one of New York’s regular high points. Throw in a headline from the near perfect DJing of Tiga and there’s literally nothing bad here. His Turbo Recordings label has steadily climbed from buzzy upstart electro label to veteran school of excellence, and they’re one of the few dance labels to have knocked up a couple of hundred releases without once letting up the pressure. Tiga’s anything goes tour of house and techno will be augmented by the deep journey of Rotterdam’s finest Martyn, the acid-flecked body music of Toronto’s Bordello, and a reliably excellent set spanning all shades of techno from residents - and stars in their own right - Taimur and Fahad. Tickets are available in advance, although a quick look at Resident Advisor suggests they’re going quick, and they’ll only get more expensive the longer you wait. As ever, location details will be revealed 24 hours beforehand, by which time we’re guessing this will have completely sold out. Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO RAVE IN LA, but can’t handle another night of lowest common denominator EDM played to slack jawed porn stars, then may we suggest the PAN label showcase… Headlining Brit Lee Gamble broke through last year with his remarkable, PAN released, ‘Diversions 19941996’ album. Gamble isn’t the only man to make a record entirely sampled from other records (in fact he was kinda preceded in this by 2562’s dubstep album made from chopped up disco vinyl), but we’re pretty sure he’s the first to have culled his source material entirely from mid ‘90s jungle tape packs. The resultant album thrust Gamble, and the fearlessly innovative PAN label, center stage, and tonight the label gathers together the troops to showcase their deep, cerebral electronic styles. Gamble’s music is a long way from the frantic breakbeats of his youth, he’s more to drum and bass what Burial is to UK Garage, a ghost in the machine remembering raves gone past with a nostalgic sigh. He hasn’t completely turned his back on the dancefloor however, and typically his sets encompass floating analog textures interrupted by visceral bursts of percussive, mutated house. He’ll be joined by PAN label boss Bill Kouligas, who along A&Ring all the labels releases - and creating their mind-bending graphic design - is something of a mainstay in the experimental dance world. More support comes from Osaka born NHK’Koxyen who, after making his name collaborating with a who’s who of innovators, including Autechre and Anti-Pop Consortium, has settled on PAN to deliver more dancefloor friendly material. Full audio visual treats are promised.

ANARCHY, THE BURLINGTON, 3425 W. FULLERTON AVENUE, CHICAGO, IL 60647

SATURDAY JULY 27 TRAXX, D’MARC CANTU

SUMMER IS FOR SUCKERS.Screw summer. We want chilly cold wave and freaked out electronics! We want icy machine funk, dammit! Lucky then that Nation Records are on hand with a night they’re calling Anarchy. Starring two of the label’s finest, Traxx and D’Marc Cantu, Anarchy is as good a place as any to get to grips with Nation’s unique JakBeat sound. Composed by applying modern editing techniques to rattling drum machines and creaking synths, JakBeat is all about getting back to the raw ass boogie; stripping house down to a primitive core, then freezing it into intense, unimaginable grooves. Cantu has been pushing this vibe for years, delivering JakBeat bombs way ahead of the current resurgence in drum heavy Chicago house. At the intimate Burlington he’ll be performing live, doubtless taking his rhythms into unheard sonic plains, and hopefully treating the crowd to some exclusives culled from his third album, set for release later this year. Traxx, the man behind the Nation banner, will be DJing one of his boundary-less sets, taking in anything from classic house to abstract dance to jazz freak outs, with the link between tunes being the roughness they’re hewn with.
