Background for Teachers:


Since establishing the United Nations ceasefire and nonviolence day, Jeremy and the Peace One Day organization have worked to raise global awareness of the Day in accordance with UN GA Resolution 55/282. In this lesson we have included a guide for students to produce a magazine for Peace Day, 21 September. The magazine will engage students to debate issues of peace and help bring nonviolence to their communities.


Purpose of the Lesson:


In this lesson, students will participate in the development of a magazine in observation of Peace Day.


Using the guide provided, the


students will engage in discussion on issues of peace with the hope of defusing aggressive and violent behavior in their communities.


Lesson Objectives:


At the end of this lesson, students should be able to • Organize a project, independently and within a group, involving the skills of planning, organizing, participating in, and sustaining an Action Committee


• Prepare a magazine for 21 September that engages the school in issues of peace and nonviolence


• Describe their participation in the discussions and project


This could be a whole-class activity, with groups assigned to one part of the magazine, or it could be a small group activity in which each group produces a magazine.


If your school is planning a wider program of activities for Peace Day, then the magazine could include locations, the groups and teachers involved, the focus and purpose of the activities, and extended commentary. The


magazine could be launched at


the beginning of the Fall semester in advance of Peace Day to generate interest and enthusiasm.
