The Peace POD Background for Teachers:


It is widely accepted that the key to humanity’s survival is ‘intercultural cooperation’. This lesson presents the perfect opportunity for students to use Peace Day to help make a real, human connection with others in another country – gaining mutual respect and understanding, and banishing the ignorance that can lead to hostility towards other cultures. Such connections can help change the culture of war into a culture of peace and nonviolence.


The idea is for students to prepare materials for a Peace POD to be sent to a school in another country and invite that school to reciprocate. The Peace POD is a box containing materials that express the students’ identity and life in the


United States: everyday objects, descriptors, photos, CDs, newspaper clippings, collages, etc. Once Peace PODs have been exchanged, the materials received can be used to put on a display as part of your school’s Peace Day activities.


The Peace POD project celebrates diversity at your school and helps young people to express their own unique cultural perspectives. By reaching out to schools around the world, students will be helping Jeremy and Peace One Day to reach at least 3 billion people with the message of Peace Day.

Purpose of the Lesson:


In this lesson students will begin to consider making a link with a school in another country with which they will share informational items and objects relevant to their culture. Using Resource J1, the ’Me and My Culture’ Mind Map, students will design a collage expressing personal ideas and beliefs. Students will make a pledge to bring in two items that could be sent along to a school


Lesson Objectives:


At the end of this lesson, students should be able to • Reflect on their personal identity and culture and prepare materials for a Peace POD • Describe the diversity of national, religious, and ethnic identities in the United States and the need for mutual respect and understanding


• Express their identity and culture through a range of media • Decide on a country with which they will make an intercultural link

in their country of choice. They will also write down the country they would like to make a link with and the reasons why they chose that country.


IMPORTANT: Teachers must supervise all contents of the Peace POD to screen for personal details or inappropriate materials.
