standards for their physical characteristics, such as size and appearance. The report: ‘Global Food; Waste Not, Want Not’, found that between 30% and 50% (1.2- 2 billion tonnes) of food produced around the world never makes it onto a plate because of these reasons. In the UK as much as 30% of vegetable crops are not harvested due to their failure to meet retailers’ demands, it found.
Capitalising on a flaw A 2010 report from the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) found 362,000 tonnes of waste occurs in the retail sector, 591,000t in manufacturing and 4,000t in distribution.
Ironically there’s an upside to this excess – a rising proportion is being sent on for human consumption. FareShare works by distributing surplus stock to organisations working with disadvantaged people in the community. Every day an average of 43,700 people in the UK benefit from the service. The products come from both large and small retailers as well as manufacturers. FareShare now has well-established relationships with leading UK retailers: Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl, The Co-operative and M&S, who are all, to varying levels, active partners with the charity.
