B-17 “Memphis Belle” by Jim Moss Jim Moss hails from Oshawa,

scale, 12-foot wingspan B-17 Memphis Belle. Jim originally built this model back in 2004 and has taken it both to the Nationals as well as Top Gun. Unfortunately while flying at Top Gun, the B-17 crashed but, as can be seen here, has been fully restored. The

aircraft weighs in at 48 pounds and is powered by four Saito .91 four-stroke engines. Jim says it actually flies better now than it did before the rebuild.

Cochise by Eric Strengell Eric Strengell recently wanted to give

the Cochise a try and writes us with the following results: “The Cochise has the distinction of being the only freeflight model I’ve ever built that did not need any trimming whatsoever. I took it to the Isaacson meet in February and just towed it up and it flew perfectly! All settings were made exactly as shown on the plans including rudder deflection, stabilizer incidence, etc. I only added 1⁄8-inch of washout in the tips. The model weighs in at 4.5 ounces with 1.5 ounces of lead in the nose and came out a bit tail heavy despite my efforts to keep things light back there. The Cochise is covered with UltraCote Light instead of tissue so that’s probably why it came out heavy. I did beef up the center section with carbon fiber sheet laminated to the back of the leading edge and both sides of the main spar out to about the third rib from the center each side. The only other changes I made were simply for looks since I was covering it in transparent material. I laminated the wing tips out of four 1⁄16 × 1⁄4-inch strips so they would blend in perfectly with the leading edge and also swept the tip turbulator spars in an arc to flow with the curve of the leading edge.”
