maureenf@flying-models.com Thank you Larry Kruse
I have been fortunate to have been able to share many a blue sky day with Larry in our mutual pursuit of the elusive thermal. Whenever you saw him on the flight line wearing his nice white FLYINGMODELS shirt, you knew that you had to be sharp to win to- day. I can say that he was always a gentle- man as well as a serious competitor. These qualities, plus his being a student of the freeflight community and its technologies, made him a great voice for freeflight in the pages of FLYING MODELS. Whenever my is- sue arrived the first thing I did was to turn to his column to see what I could learn. One of the first times I met Larry was at a 1970’s running of the Rocky Mountain Free Flight Championships in Denver. Larry was flying a P-nut scale model with a DT. Wow, I thought, this fellow sure has a lot of confidence in his model’s performance, or he sure is trying to fake us out. To make matters worse the model was that of an antique pusher on floats! As it turned out he needed the DT as the mod- el flew very well and he won the contest. Larry’s knowledge of freeflight and his ability to tell our story with clarity was a pos- itive force in keeping freeflight alive and well. Thank you Larry for all you have done for freeflight and modeling in general. JERRYMURPHY, President Magnificent Mountain Men Club

16 And thank you, Joe
I was personally saddened to learn that Joe Demarco was putting the lid on his inkwell. He has been a mainstay for so many publications, and more importantly, model- ers like myself who lacked his talent in bringing their latest creations to an intelli- gible form for fellow modelers.
I recall succinctly the one and only time I decided that I could ink my own plans and gain some traction with Editor Don McGov- ern, who was himself an excellent drafts- man. I proudly sent my completed inked velum drawing to Don and got a phone call from him the next week. He was very kind, but he said, “If inking a plan is a problem,
we have some excellent people like Joe De- Marco who can do that work well and relieve you of some of that burden.” I took the hint. From then on, I sent only pencil drawings to the editors of FLYING MODELS, Model Air- plane News, Model Aviation, and Model Builder. Of the total 96 plans I’ve done since 1973 (55 of them mine and 41 that I pub- lished for others), most were inked by Joe DeMarco. I was always pleased to see a title box that said “Drawn by Larry Kruse— Inked by Joe Demarco” because I knew Joe would take my vague drawing-pencil mean- derings and turn them into works of art. As is so often the case in the modeling press and a surprise to many, we never actu- ally meet our collaborators in person, but rather let the mail ( and now electronic me- dia) bridge the gap between people. Such is the case with Joe DeMarco. Over the several decades where our respective work became integral to a published article, I may have talked to Joe on the phone a couple of times to clarify a point in a drawing. That was our sum total of contacts.
Nonetheless, I consider him a modeling partner and a friend-in-need who put the fi- nal touches on any publication effort I may have undertaken. For these reasons, his closing shop is a personal loss—and certain- ly one to the entire modeling public. Thank you, Joe, for all of your good work over the years—and thank you for making us all look polished and professional. Your contributions will be greatly missed. LARRY KRUSE Lawton, OK
A new “techie”
I've been “reading” the July issues on my iPad! I downloaded the Carstens App and then purchased the July 2013 issue. I never thought I’d be one of those technology types, but having a ball learning what this new de- vice can do.
Anyway, I loved the article on the AJ In- terceptor. The plane would be great this win- ter flying indoors.
