Join the fight against bullying A
nti-Bullying Week takes place from the 18th to the 22nd November 2013, but
preparations are already well under way, with this year’s theme announced: the future is ours: safe, fun and connected.
This Anti-Bullying Week, The Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA) calls on young people to take the lead on creating a future without bullying, by using the privilege of new technologies to promote positive communication, rather than being held back by cyber bullying.
This year a competition has been created with two young Random House (RHCP) authors to raise awareness of the issue of cyber-bullying. The competition aims to encourage young people to get involved with the campaign throughout the summer months for the build up to Anti-Bullying Week.
The competition boasts two age categories, each to be judged by an expert children’s author.
The 8 – 12 years group will be judged by writer/illustrator of Darcy Burdock, Laura Dockrill, and the 13 – 18 years age group will have their work appraised by new author of Turf, John Lucas. Entrants will be required to write a short story, blog, news article or poem of no more than 500 words, that describes their vision of a world where young people have taken control of cyberspace – and eliminated bullying for good.
The best entries will be shared through the RHCP social networking sites and the ABA blog, websites and social networking sites. The successful applicant in each age category will win the opportunity to personally select their own collection of RHCP titles, whilst a further fifty books will be awarded to their school or college. In addition, the winner will receive a visit to their school or college by Laura Dockrill (8-12 years category) and John Lucas (13-18 years category) who will present the prizes to the winner of each category.
Laura Dockrill will judge entries in the 8-12 age group category
Entries should be sent in via the ABA website

University joins charity to train tomorrow's teachers
O
ver 350 new teachers will be placed in Yorkshire and Humberside schools and trained to become outstanding teachers of the future, as Sheffield Hallam University becomes the regional training provider for Teach First. The University has been awarded a contract to train over 100 postgraduates a year for three years with Teach First, the charity that trains and supports people with leadership potential to become inspirational teachers in schools in low income communities across the UK.
Save the date! S
port Relief, the nation’s favourite sports day, is back on Friday 21 March 2014, providing the perfect opportunity to bring the whole school together to get active, have fun and help others. So put the date in the school calendar now and make sure your pupils don’t miss out.
Last year, thousands of schools across the country fundraised for Sport Relief 2012 – from pupils running a sponsored-mile dressed as their favourite sports star, to ultra- competitive ‘teachers vs. pupils’ football matches. Sporty or not, everyone was a winner, because not only did pupils feel good when they got involved, they did good too. £5.8 million was raised by schools in total, changing countless lives at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.
Jo Robertson, assistant head teacher at The Deepings School, reflected on her involvement: “For me, the engagement and enjoyment that Sport Relief brought was some of the greatest I have experienced as a teacher. By getting involved with the campaign, we found that at the same time as raising money for others, we were reaping rich rewards as a school. Our pupils grew in confidence as they stepped up to take the lead in organising events and coming up with fundraising ideas. They developed in new and exciting ways and we were reminded of how much they are capable of. The pride they felt when they realised the impact they’d made was palpable. Plus, they now see us - the staff - in a different light as we shared in some of the sillier moments!”

Participants will achieve Qualified Teacher Status and complete a Leadership Development Programme to further develop their skills. Sheffield Hallam will be the initial teacher-training provider in Yorkshire and the Humber for both primary and secondary participants - one of only nine such providers in the UK. The Initial Teacher Training forms part of the two-year Teach First Leadership Development Programme, which combines working, training and qualifying as a teacher with coaching and mentoring to develop leadership skills. Participants teach in schools for a minimum of two years and during that time, work with pupils to raise their academic achievement and increase their aspirations for the future.
Joshua Fisher enrolled on the Teach First programme at Sheffield Hallam University in 2011 and was placed in Newfield School. He was awarded his PGCE in July 2012 and was rated as 'outstanding'. He has since been made Acting Head of History in his school and has found the Teach First experience to be an ideal way in to the teaching profession. Joshua said: "Teach First is aspirational in its aims and instils in you that you can make a difference to children’s lives. The Leadership Development Programme is well thought out and carefully constructed. I had a teacher mentoring me throughout my first year, but I was also assigned a University tutor who was in constant contact with me as I worked towards my PGCE. For me it was the best of both worlds, I was a full-time teacher gaining real hands on experience and this, coupled with a first rate tutor who helped me master the theory of teaching quickly, ensured that I could effectively deliver in the classroom.”
