Buildings, Maintence, Refurbishment & Design Multi-purpose building board best for school refurb
As well as satisfying standard regulations, a level of quality is also expected in a boarding school, leading specifiers to consider superior building material credentials and quality internal finish in the planning process. Whether considering a completely new build or a refurbishment, dry-lining building materials provide the flexibility to be installed quickly, to reduce disruption to pupils, but also be durable enough to facilitate heavy fixtures to walls without cracking or ageing over time. For back-to-back living environments, specifiers must also choose materials that carry good sound qualities to minimise disruption between each room. Finding wall, flooring and ceiling solutions that provide complete internal sound protection is therefore a key stage of the planning process pre-built.
A
boarding school should provide a good quality, sustainable and comfortable living environment for pupils as well as teaching environments fit for purpose.
For building and refurbishment projects on educational establishments, specifiers must source building materials that adhere to the Education (School Premises) Regulations 1999, which stipulate the minimum standards required for school premises. Regulations include adhering to acoustic conditions of the building, fire and health and safety, which can be achieved by using suitable building materials.
Brockwood Park School is an international co- educational boarding school in Hampshire that has undertaken a large refurbishment to its accommodation facilities using Fermacell dry- lining board.
Carrying a Class 0 classification under the UK’s “reaction to fire” and “fire resistance regulations”, Fermacell dry-lining board provides a solution to exceed the minimum provisions set out in the building regulations. Its acoustic qualities are enhanced by its fibre-reinforced gypsum board which offers a superior acoustic performance of 43 decibels without requiring

additional insulation. A building material such as Fermacell is particularly appropriate for this type of accommodation because of its ‘one-board type’ solution suitable for walls, floors and ceilings that enables the board to be used throughout the project to improve overall impact, acoustic and fire performance. Andrew Richardson, technical manager at Fermacell, said: “When working on a project of this kind, it is important to use flexible building materials that satisfy the regulations for educational buildings, but also go above and beyond such requirements. We appreciate that specifiers and architects can find it difficult to source building materials that satisfy sound, fire and density requirements whilst reducing the carbon footprint of a building, and it is vital to provide solutions to meet these needs without compromise.”
Peter Brodbelt, associate of Roderick James Architects LLP, comments: “We used Fermacell’s dry-lining board on the floors, ceilings and partitions for its denseness, acoustic separation and robust qualities. The dry-lining board was a prominent material used throughout the build and was fitted easily to softwood studwork. “The board provides the project with the required robust finish needed for a busy and high activity building.”
The project was completed in April 2013 and 5,000 metre sq of Fermacell was specified.
UK manufacturer has designed a dual purpose, fully lockable ICT desk that is being marketed at under £500. The bespoke design allows schools and colleges to utilise ICT classrooms for normal lessons. Monitors, keyboards and pc base units are fully locked away yet are quickly accessible when required. The monitor moves down within the unit to become completely hidden. The multi-purpose desk unit has built in cable management holes and is 1100mm wide as standard. Strata’s CD5 desk is available in a variety of colour finishes and is delivered fully assembled complete with quality locks and keys.
Strata Panels are also marketing a sturdy keyboard desk that has a pull out shelf suitable for keyboards or pianos up to 985mm wide. This flexible workstation, ideal for music rooms, is priced as low as £139 each for orders of 20 units plus.
