National Futures Championship athletes made signs and sat amongst a crowd of 3,000 to watch the USA take on Argentina on June 23, 2012

Broadcasted live on the NBC Sports Network from Virginia, Team USA dug deep in their final preparation before the Olympics in a four match series against then world ranked No. 1 Argentina. The 2011 Pan American rivals brought the same intensity level and the U.S. Women's Olympic Field Hockey Team lit up the scoreboard with down-to-the-wire games - earning two ties, a win and a loss.

Olympics was backed with a year of growth and world- class competition behind them. Although the U.S. Women’s Team put on a strong performance during its first match against Germany they fell 2-1. The next preliminary game against Argentina proved to be another upset, giving the USA Olympic squad their first and only win of the tournament. For the rest of the series USA fought hard against Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Belgium but left London with a lackluster record with a win and five losses (continued on page 14).


CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE I September 29–October 7


Determined to display the consistency Team USA struggled to maintain throughout the Olympic Games, the squad headed to Dublin, Ireland for Champions Challenge I. A one-goal shutout against Scotland presented the U.S. with its first loss. The series continued with wins against South Africa and Wales and two buzzer-beater losses against Ireland. A positive energy followed USA into the gold medal round against Australia. After taking an early lead, the U.S. were ultimately defeated 1-6 and had to settle for a silver medal.
