U.S. Men’s National Team’s intended course was to compete against host country India during the first game of the FIH Men’s Olympic Qualifier. The U.S. made the six -team tournament – the winner earning a berth in the 2012 Olympics – after its fifth- place finish at the XVI Pan American Games in Fall 2011. However, due to a number of athlete retirements, injuries and job conflicts resulting in a depleted roster, USA Field Hockey management made the decision to keep the team stateside.
The focus of the senior men's program shifted to the FIH World League Round 1 tournament, which the United States hosted at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Cali., November 16-18.
The U.S. Men's National Team easily advanced to World League Round II after a dominant performance at home for World League Round I, contending against Mexico and Guatemala. The U.S. shutout Mexico 8-0 and racked up a total of 24 goals against their two opponents. The win gave the team entrance to World League Round II in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2013. Two U.S. players were awarded for their individual performances. Patrick Harris was named the top goal scorer of the tournament and Aki Kaeppeler, the youngest player on the team, was named player of the tournament.
