wo champion Devon piemakers have won gold in a national competition run by meat industry experts. Tom’s Pies of Clyst St Mary won gold for its steak and ale pie, and Hayman’s Butchers of Sidmouth also won gold for its steak pie. England’s Best Steak Pie Competition 2013 was run by EBLEX, an organisation which represents the English beef and sheep industry.
Over 100 pies were entered into the competition by retailers, caterers and manufacturers, but only 23 of them won gold awards. And those gold-winning pies have now gone through to the competition’s final. One of them will be declared the winner in each category (‘independent retailers’ and ‘food service outlets’), and an overall winner will also be announced. Tom’s Pies, hand-made using the best locally- sourced, seasonal and sustainable ingredients, are the brainchild of head chef and director Tom Cull, who also runs caterers-to-the-stars Dartmoor Kitchen, and his pies are stocked by everyone from small independent
grocers to Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Selfridges. He said: “Winning this gold award makes me very proud indeed. But importantly, it’s down to my wonderful team who work tirelessly to produce a consistently great-quality product we can all be proud of. Public accolades such as these make all the hard work well worth it! Hopefully our faithful stockists who sell our pies can also feel rewarded for their unwavering support.” Hayman’s Butchers in Church Street, Sidmouth, was established as a family business back in 1907 and is now run by the fourth generation, Stewart Hayman. The shop offers high-quality locally-sourced meat, but also a wide range of pasties, pies, cooked meats and ready meals, many of which have won national prizes. Stewart said: “Over years we’ve entered various competitions, and it’s always pleasing to get a gold.” Hugh Judd from EBLEX said: “With over 100 entries in this year’s steak pie competition, the judging was incredibly tough, and with 18 companies competing for the title, the final is certainly going to be exciting!” - For more
