Eating out

Left, a summer bento box from Steaks n Sushi; below, an open steak sandwich from Southernhay House

Gourmandine Crêperie & Bistrot in Catherine Street is so much more than just (whisper-light and delectable) crêpes, having added classic French dishes to its menu. Chef Mikael Perret has developed a new and exciting summer menu, including shredded duck and buckwheat noodle salad topped with a free range poached egg and chilli dressing, pancetta- wrapped Devon pork loin with a cider reduction, and Lyme Bay crab madeleine, saffron mayonnaise and sun-dried tomato purée. And you can also dine alfresco while people-watching. The Fat Pig in John Street and The

Rusty Bike in Howell Road are both well worth a visit for delicious dishes slow- cooked to perfection, with incredible flavours and top-quality ingredients. And The Barn Owl on Exeter Business

Park has reopened after a £150,000 renovation, with 169 covers inside and 119 outside. The new summer menu features pub classics like home-made beefburger and fish pie, plus inventive modern twists such as aromatic braised pork belly and spinach and ricotta strudel.

Get out of town Gidleigh Park on the edge of Dartmoor continues to dazzle with its exquisite food and stunning countryside surroundings. Home to much-loved local hero and two- Michelin-starred celebrity chef Michael Caines, there’s a reason why Hollywood actresses, rock royalty and real royalty flock here to dine. And during June, you can enjoy Gidleigh’s seasonal lunch menu for £42 for two courses or £55 for three courses (available until Sunday 30 June 12pm-2.30pm subject to availability, pre-booking essential). Speaking of spectacular locations,

luxurious Dartmoor country house hotel Bovey Castle certainly has the ‘wow’ factor. And for the rest of June to mark Devon Restaurant Month, the county’s finest seasonal ingredients feature in Marc Hardiman’s weekly-changing three-course set menu such as Dartmoor lamb and South Devon crab (served Sunday to Thursday evenings in June, £25 per person, pre-booking essential). How about afternoon tea on the terrace, enjoying scones with Devon jam and cream, sandwiches, home-made cakes and fine teas with unspoilt views of the estate and the moorland beyond (served daily 3pm-5.30pm, from £19 per person)? Go loco for the food at The Railway

in Honiton, a tucked-away gastro gem which serves sensational food in a setting so friendly it’s like you’re a guest in the home of owners JB and Melanie Sancey. Another popular gastro dining

destination is Hartnoll Hotel in Bolham near Tiverton, whose fabulous food attracts diners from far and wide. With new outside furniture and canopies boosting its terrace area this summer, and a consistently-great menu, it’s no wonder people don’t dine here just the once, they come back time and time again. Sidmouth Harbour Hotel The

Westcliff got a rave review in our last issue, and Selley’s in Sidmouth is also fab. Award-winning Combe House Devon

in Gittisham is irrestistibly romantic, a Grade-I Elizabethan luxury country house hotel in a fairytale setting. And the menu has more than a little magic as well, with Master Chefs Of Great Britain in the kitchen whose passion and love of the finest local seasonal produce is plain to see on every plate. Winning Marco Pierre White’s TV show Kitchen Wars has put seafood

restaurant Les Saveurs in Exmouth firmly on the gastro map, and if Olivier and Sheila Guyard-Mulkerrin can impress the godfather of modern cooking, what higher endorsement could there be? Another award-winner, ODE in

Shaldon, is a must-visit, with a fine dining restaurant open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday and a cafe in Ness Cove for less-formal but nonetheless- cracking dining. Look out for lobster and crab events over the summer. When it comes to spending your hard-

earned wages, The Jack In The Green at Rockbeare is a safe bet. Head chef Matthew Mason positively fizzes with passion – he and his talented team want to stun you, and they always do. Sample their new summer menus, and why not dine outside in the stylish courtyard. We’re very excited that The Jack’s owners are busy renovating The Five Bells at Clyst Hydon, hopefully open in August. Country pubs don’t come much better

than The Lazy Toad at Brampford Speke, with an idyllic setting, a warm welcome and fantastic food including foraged leaves and home-grown produce. The Elephant in Torquay always ranks

highly in lists of Britain’s top restaurants, and with good reason. Its fine dining Michelin-starred restaurant The Room is now open for the summer season with a nine-course tasting menu, and its new private dining room is available for hire. Hidden gem Froginwell Vineyard &

Cider Barn at Woodbury Salterton offers delicious home-cooked food and stunning countryside views while you dine. And Riverford Field Kitchen in

Buckfastleigh has a summer menu full of fresh home-grown flavours, with 15 per cent off supper from Monday to Friday throughout June. EL
